This book delves into the dark side of human nature and the clash between chaos and order. Nina: Girl Overboard (BL 5.7) by Aimee Ferris. (part of SASS series). Marina is tried of her life and signs up for a SASS excursion working with dolphins. In the process she has some guy troubles. In the end she has a struggle that she has to overcome that causes internal conflict. Edward: Ranger’s Apprentice: Burning Bridge (BL 6.3) by John Flanagan. (fantasy). Medieval times. There is this evil dude who plans on overtaking the kingdom. The book follows his strategic planning and how the protagonist messes up his plan. Erin: Perfect (BL 3.5) by Natasha Friend. (realistic fiction) When Isabelle’s father dies, she develops a eating disorder (bulimia) to deal with the situation. Ally: The Alchemyst (BL 6.4) by Michael Scott (fantasy). First in the Immortal series. Two kids, Josh and Sophie, are talented magicians, though they don’t know it. They work for the alchemist Nick Fleming, who has a book called the Codex (which can be used to take over the world). Josh and Sophie have to stop the dark elders from taking over the world using the Codex. Will: Atherton (BL 5.7-6.2) by Patrick (adventure; trilogy). Edgar, an orphan, lives in a “world” which has three levels. It is prohibited to move from one level to another. Edgar defies the rule and climbs up to the highlands. The story builds around his experiences in the Highlands. Chantelle: I Am Number Four (BL 4.4) by Pitticus Lore (sci fi/adventure). A boy named Four has to move from country to country, fleeing from the Mogadorians, who are trying to kill him. He fakes his identity and leads a double life. The story revolves around trying to live a normal life in society by keeping a low profile (being invisible). Kelly: Avalon High (BL 5.1) by Meg Cabot (far-fetched realistic fiction) A fast read. A girl called Ellie moves to Maryland and meets a guy (from King Arthur time). They have to work out a plan to prevent the bad guy from killing the good guy. Derrick: Science Fair: A Story of Mystery, Danger, International Suspense and a Very Nervous Frog by Dave Barry (BL 5.5) (realistic fiction). A couple of middle schools sponsor a science fair. The rich kids want to win the science fair so they hire people to make their projects for them. There is an evil guy behind all the projects that are linked. The protagonist finds out the link between the projects and tries to stop the evil guy. Peyton: Ergon (BL 5.6) by Christopher Palonni (fantasy). A poor farm boy finds a “stone” which turns out to be a dragon egg. When the dragon hatches, he finds out he is a dragon rider. He has to train as a dragon rider and fight against an evil king. Matthew: Boy: Tales of Childhood (BL 6.0) by Roald Dahl (autobiography). Roald Dahl retells adventures with his childhood friend. They play tricks on the lady who owns the candy store (like putting a dead mouse in her candy jar). He is sent away to a board school and the book follows his adventures there. Marc: Dragon Rider (BL 4.9) by Cornelia Funke (fantasy). World with mythical creatures who find out that humans are coming to flood their realm. One dragon + a mythical creature called Sorrel (cat) start out to find the Rim of Heaven (in the Himalayas). The books tells what happens to them along the way.
