Textbook:
For All Practical Purposes: Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics, 9th
edition. You might not need the book.
Course Description:
Applications of modern mathematics to management and decision-making, including
the solution of optimization problems using network theory, methods of optimal
scheduling, voting methods, game theory, and related strategies.
Applications include planning of postal delivery routes, placement of cable TV
lines, US Congressional apportionment, and dispute resolution.
GRADING GUIDELINES:
Tests:
There will be four exams during the semester. There is no cumulative final.
Your fourth test will be during the final exam period. Your four tests will
combine to count for 80% of your grade.
Your highest test score will count 25%, your middle two will count for 20%, and
your lowest test score will count 15%. Thus, ALL tests count; there are no
dropped test grades. See the attendance policy if you need to miss a test day.
There is no final exam for this course.
Group Work:
You will have in class group work on a weekly basis. This will count for 10%
of your grade. These days are announced ahead of time, and will be posted
online once the calendar has been set.
Class Quizzes:
Starting June 09, we will have daily in class quizzes at the beginning of
class. You will be alloted 7 - 10 minutes for these. Make sure you are on
time for your quiz. There will be no quizzes during Group Work days or lectures
immediately after a test.

PERTINENT WEBSITES:
My website (http://math.uga.edu/~pbergonio) will have your daily worksheets, a
copy of this syllabus, and the class calendar of events. If you miss class for
any reason, please print off the worksheet for the day you missed and get the
notes from someone.
Your grades for the class will be posted on eLC: https://elc.uga.edu.
ATTENDANCE:
PROMPT, COMPLETE ATTENDANCE is expected at all classes. Professional courtesy
toward your instructor and your classmates is expected. Tests may be made up
in the event of University of Georgia athletics arrangements in advance only)
or documented illness.
Attendance and Quizzes:
Quizzes will be held daily, except for Test days and the class time right after
a test. If you know you will have to miss a certain day, let me know in
advance, and I can administer your quiz during office hours the day before.
Any missed quizzes, regardless of excuse, will count as a zero. I will be
dropping your three lowest quiz grades at the end of the term.
Attendance and Group Work:
You are required to attend group work days. Missing a group work day will not
only hinder your performance in the class, it will weaken your group.
If you know that you will not be in class during a group work day, let me know.
You may do the group work on your own (outside of class) with a 15% penalty.
This penalty may be lowered if the excuse warrants it. Moreover, if you are
more than 10 minutes late for your group work, you will be assessed with a 10%
late penalty. These penalties are non-negotiable.
Attendance and Tests:
Tests can be made up, with an appropriate written documentation. Please note
that any makeup tests may be different (and probably more difficult) than the
regular test. There are no penalties assessed for a makeup test.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY:
Please speak with me before you process your withdrawal to ensure that you will
get a WP. Note that as mandated by the University of Georgia, any withdrawals
processed after July 01 will be an automatic WF.
