What started Jim Crow?
The song Jump Jim Crow was shown
on a Minstrel Show. The entertainer
Thomas Dartmouth Rice performed as
the popular character Jim Crow in
1928. In the shows white performers
would blacken their faces with burnt
cork (called BlackFace). They would
dress in outlandish costumes, and
then perform songs and skits that
mocked African Americans.
