independent of the student’s course grade.
Grading of assignments is determined by following instructions, accuracy, completeness, and
printing/submitting on time.
Normal return time for daily and/or weekly quizzes, small weekly assignments and similar type
projects is the next class meeting or no later than one (1) week.
Normal return time for extensive assignments, large lab projects, extensive quizzes, exams and
similar type projects is one (1) to two (2) weeks.
Authorized Tools
Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
FERPA is the Federal Law which requires the school to protect your privacy. As such, neither overall
grades nor assignment grades will be discussed in the class or in front of other students. Students
must contact faculty during office hours or by appointment to discuss grades.
Computer Requirements
Students will need access to a computer with Microsoft Office 2013. Due to changes in options and
features, using an older version of MS Office will result in portions of assignments not being correct.
Class time is provided to work on Computer Literacy assignments.

Classroom/Computer Lab Policies
The primary purpose of the computer labs on campus is to support the educational process. Priority
use of computer labs will be given to students for the completion of assignments, exercises, and
projects for academic courses. Food and drinks are prohibited in the computer labs. For
detailed information regarding computer usage, e-mail, and network policies, please refer to the
Student Handbook http://www.osuit.edu/campus_community/cis/computer_usage.php.
Computer Labs: Computers are available in the campus library, LASSO Center (NCAT Rooms 308
and 309), Noble Center rooms 101, 102, 104, 106, 107, 204, 303, 304, & 305 for general student use
when classes aren’t being conducted. Use these campus computers if you need more time than
allotted in class or need to catch up on assignments due to missed class time.
All computers on campus are set to delete files saved in My Documents or on the Desktop when the
computer is turned off; therefore, it is important to always save your work to your USB drive.
Do not cannot share a USB drive with a classmate because it will not allow two files with the same
name on the drive. It replaces the original file with the new version. Each student must have his/her
own USB drive.
Instructions for Specific Tasks and Assignments
Each student is expected to complete his/her own assignments. Sharing of assignments
will result in zero credit and possible failure of the course for all students involved.
It is imperative to read and follow ALL of the instructions provided within each
assignment to earn good scores. Do not skip any steps!
Section Activities: Complete the Section Activities in each section of the textbook. The Section
Activities from the Office 2013 textbook should be saved using Save As to the student’s USB
drive using the name given in the assignment, printed out, and submitted into the
appropriately labeled Dropbox found in D2L by the date indicated on the assignment schedule below.
Save As is easier to direct the file to the appropriate directory
Prior to submitting the assignment for grading, compare the final version to the model answer at the
beginning of the section of the textbook. Assignments uploaded to the incorrect submission area
may be overlooked and, therefore, not graded. If the wrong file is uploaded, simply upload the
correct file and it will replace the original document. The last document uploaded is the one graded.

11. Click the “Submit” button
12. The next screen will tell you if the file uploaded successfully.
13. D2L will also send a confirmation email that the file was successfully uploaded. Do not delete
these emails!
Keep all saved assignments until the end of the semester and final grade is posted. The Assignment
Schedule contains all assignments and due dates. Grades will be posted in D2L as assignments are
graded. These grades will be based on completeness, quality, accuracy in following instructions, and
timely submission—late submissions will not be accepted, resulting in a zero on the assignment.
Skills Reviews: The Skills Reviews are located at the end of each section in the textbook. If
something seems unfamiliar, go back through the section activities. Upload your finished projects to
the appropriately labeled Dropbox in D2L and print out prior to the due date.
Knowledge Checks:
These are questions in your book at the end of each section. You are to answer them and include
the page number where the answer is located, even if you know the answer. You don’t need to type
the question. Type your answers and pages numbers in a Word file, Save, and Dropbox.
I recommend completing the KC just before you take the Concept Quiz.
Concept Quizzes: The Concept Quizzes are in the Quizzes section of D2L. The Concept Quizzes are
multiple choice questions over the section just completed. Notes and textbook may be used to look
up answers. Some of the answers will be found in the steps of the activities just completed and
others will be found in the paragraphs before and after the activity steps, so read through all of the
text. Take quizzes in or out of class using a computer (no tablet or smart phone).
Each multiple choice question is worth 2 points, so the total possible points indicates the number of
questions (5 to 10 questions). The questions are randomly pulled from a bank of questions and
placed in random order. One attempt per quiz, 30 minutes per quiz.
Unit Exams: This course has three exams, one at the end of each application unit: MS Word, MS
Excel, and MS PowerPoint. These Unit Exams are open book and open note and must be completed
in class on designated test days.. All Unit Exams must be taken in class. No make-up exams
will be administered except our last day Mon, Dec 7.
Participation: Regular attendance is required. Detailed attendance records are kept.
Late Work
Late work is not accepted, as ample time will be provided and assignments are made available well
before the due dates. Work may be submitted early.
Student Conduct
Students are expected to cooperate in maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning.
Courteous and respectful behavior is expected from all students each day. All cell phones must be
Lewis Fall 2015

turned off and put away out of sight. Sending and receiving calls/messages distracts students from
class work and testing.
Utilizing time well is a valuable work characteristic. Please use all of each of class time as you can
work ahead on everything except for unit tests.
OSU-IT is a tobacco free campus—this includes e-cigarettes.
Specific behaviors which will not be tolerated in the classroom include:
 Profanity and acting out
 Talking, typing, or printing when instructor is addressing the class
 Abuse to classroom furniture or equipment
 Abuse to classroom equipment
Use of any of these behaviors or other behaviors either prohibited by OSU-IT or disruptive to the
learning environment will result in the student being asked to leave the classroom for the remainder
of the class for the day. Further use of these behaviors will result in the student conduct office being
notified.
University & Course Expectations
It is the responsibility of each OSUIT student to read, abide by, and maintain a copy of the syllabus
for this course. Syllabi are available on the OSU-IT website.
Students understand that excerpts or portions of their work may be utilized for institutional
assessment purposes. The purpose of institutional assessment is for verification of student learning
and program improvement. Every effort will be made to keep this information confidential.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, each student with a disability is responsible for
notifying the University of his/her disability and requesting accommodations. If you think you have a
qualified disability and need special accommodations, you should notify the instructor and request
verification of eligibility for accommodations from the Office of Academic Accommodations/ LASSO
Center. Please advise the instructor of your disability as soon as possible, and contact The LASSO
Center, to ensure timely implementation of appropriate accommodations. Faculty have an obligation
to respond when they receive official notice of a disability but are under no obligation to provide
retroactive accommodations. To receive services, you must submit appropriate documentation and
complete an intake process during which the existence of a qualified disability is verified and
reasonable accommodations are identified. The LASSO Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Noble
Center. You may call 918.293.4855 for more information or fax documentation to 918.293.4853.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty or misconduct is neither condoned nor tolerated at OSUIT. Any student found
guilty of academic dishonesty or misconduct shall be subject to disciplinary action. Academic
dishonesty and/or misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: (1) Plagiarism:
the representation of previously written, published, or creative work as one’s own; (2) Unauthorized
collaboration on projects; (3) Cheating on examinations; (4) Unauthorized advance access to
exams; (5) Fraudulent alteration of academic materials; (6) Knowing cooperation with another
person in an academically dishonest undertaking. Students are required to actively protect their work
Lewis Fall 2015

against misuse by others. For details, refer to The OSUIT Student Handbook (Student Rights and
Responsibilities Governing Student Behavior) available online at
http://www.osuit.edu/academics/forms/student_rights_responsibility.pdf.
Students must complete their own work. Anyone else completing assignments or copying
assignments is cheating. Do not allow another student to copy work and/or answers. Any
plagiarized work will receive a zero for the assignment. Second incident of cheating will
result in a failing grade.
I use Turnitin software that works within D2L. If work is copied, even if from another campus at
another time, I receive a notification.
Attendance Policy For Face-to-Face Courses
A primary component of OSUIT's Mission is “to prepare and sustain a diverse student body as
competitive members of a world-class workforce.” Regular and consistent attendance not only aids in
academic success, dependable attendance is a requirement in today's real-world employment;
therefore, regular and consistent attendance is a requirement in all OSUIT courses.
Definitions:
Absent: Failing to attend all or a significant portion of a class or lab session.
A. Students may not be marked as absent if missing class for situations such as, but not limited to
1. participating in a required university activity such as a field trip;
2. fulfilling a military obligation;
3. a mandatory court appearance;
4. death in the immediate family;
5. extreme illness or accident to oneself or immediate family. Instructors, at their
discretion, may require proof of such events.
B. It is the responsibility of the student to contact and inform the instructor and/or department in
advance of such excused absences whenever possible.
Tardy: Arriving late to class as defined by the individual class instructor. Faculty, at their
discretion, may equate three tardies to equal one absence.
Procedures:
Early Intervention
A. Any student who misses 10% (3 class periods) of an individual course (or earlier at faculty
discretion) during a regular seven-week semester, or the equivalent portion of time in a shorter
session, will have their name submitted by that course instructor to the OSUIT Early Alert System
for retention intervention.
B. At the point the Early Alert is issued, the student must meet with their assigned faculty advisor or
designated faculty/staff member within seven (7) academic calendar days for counseling on how
to improve their attendance and academic success.
Excessive Absences
A. The University reserves the right to administratively withdraw any student from an individual
course who misses 20% (6 class periods) of that course, whether excused or unexcused, and,
Lewis Fall 2015
in the opinion of the instructor, the student does not have a reasonable opportunity to be
successful in the course.
B. Students should be aware any of the following may impact their financial aid:
1. being administratively withdrawn from a course
2. dropping a course
3. their last date of attendance in a course
Please see OSUIT Policy 2-021 for full details and procedures.

Keys to Success in Computer Literacy and Applications
Attend all classes on time and work until the class period is over.
You may need to work outside of class to complete work
You may work ahead, but you must work in class first. Do not skip classes and submit work—I may
not grade it.
Be prepared—always have your textbook, assignment sheet, and USB drive with you
Always check off assignments completed and make note of last step of incomplete activities.
Stay focused and be productive in class.
Ask questions—try to find the answer yourself first just like you would on the job, but ask if you can’t
find the answer
Keep track of all due dates and tests; no late work is accepted and no makeup tests are given.
Lewis Fall 2015
Follow step-by-step instructions for all assignments; use naming conventions for all documents.
Submit assignments to D2L as soon as they are completed, even if early.
Complete assignments on laptop or desktop computers. Don’t use smart phones or tablets for quizzes
or work.
All work is to be printed and dropboxed except the Concept Quizzes. Those are done in D2L.
If you drop work out of class, you can print from the dropbox when you arrive in class.
Keep this syllabus in your textbook and bring to all classes. Become accustomed to looking up basic
course info. This is considered a contract that I must abide by; changes can only be made if I
notified you in writing.
