Humans and other complex organisms have a closed circulatory system where blood is contained within a series of vessels. This allows the speed, pressure and distribution of blood to be controlled. 3 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Single and double circulatory systems 4 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Double circulatory system advantages The double circulatory system produces higher pressures in blood vessels than a single circulatory system can. This creates a greater rate of blood flow to the tissues. The greater rate of flow allows blood to be pumped quickly even through the bodies of large mammals, like elephants and whales. 5 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 True or false? 6 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 7 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 What is blood made up of? 8 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Which component? 9 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Blood vessels 10 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Which type of blood vessels? 11 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Gases moving in and out of the blood 12 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Blood and blood vessels 13 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 14 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Structures of the heart 15 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 The cardiac cycle 16 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 The stages of the cardiac cycle 17 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 18 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Glossary 19 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Anagrams 20 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Which structure? 21 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011 Multiple-choice quiz 22 of 22 © Boardworks Ltd 2011
