Description:
A continuation of ESOL 0350. This course is designed to further develop critical
reading skills for college-bound students. The skills gained in ESOL 0350 are further
refined to guide students toward mastery of deduction, inference, and figurative
language.

ESOL 0353

10 Weeks
A continuation of ESOL 0350. This course is designed to further develop critical reading
skills for college-bound students. The skills gained in ESOL 0350 are further refined to
guide students towards mastery of deduction, inference and figurative language.
Student Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate familiarity with a challenging academic target vocabulary;
2. Distinguish between main idea and supporting details in a moderate-length reading
passage on an academic subject;
3. Read and understand a large volume of level-appropriate text. (Extensive reading)
4. Read and summarize a work of English-language fiction.;
5. Collect and evaluate academic sources.

Making Connections (2nd edition) by Kenneth Packenham
Longman Dictionary of American English (optional)
Lab Requirements
Two hours each week will be devoted to work in the computer lab. Students will use
Focus on Grammar, Pronunciation power and other materials determined by the
instructor that facilitate student learning.

Academic Honesty
All Houston Community College System students are required to exercise academic honesty in completion of
all tests and assignments. Penalties for academic dishonesty (cheating on a test, plagiarism, collusion on an
assignment, etc.) may include, but are not limited to a reduced grade or a "0" on that test or assignment, a "W"
in the course, or an "F" in that course.
Attendance and Withdrawal Policies
According to the HCC Student Handbook, you can be dropped from this class if you have more
than 12.5% absences of the total hours of instruction. For this class, you can be dropped after 10
hrs. of Reading Class. You are considered Tardy if you come to class after the class has begun. If
you are tardy three times, that is an absence.
NOTICE: Students who repeat a course three or more times may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and
other Texas public colleges and universities. If you are considering course withdrawal because you are not earning
passing grades, confer with your instructor/counselor as early as possible about your study habits, reading and writing
homework, test-taking skills, attendance, course participation, and opportunities for tutoring or other assistance that
might be available.
