Present Progressive
• We already know that the present tense = the
person doing the action does or is doing the
action.
• We use the present progressive to REALLY
emphasize that something is currently
unfolding.
• We express this in English with verbs that end
in –ing
• How do we express this in Spanish?
How to form the gerund
in the present progressive
• -AR verbs: remove –AR, add –ANDO
• -ER and –IR verbs: remove –ER or –IR, add –IENDO.
• If the stem of –er or –ir verbs ends in a vowel, we add –yendo
– leer
– oír
– ir

• For example, if I want to tell someone that I’m dancing right
now, exactly this moment as we speak, I would say
• “Estoy bailando.”
• If I wanted to ask someone what they were currently doing,
right now, as we speak, I would say:
• “¿Qué estás haciendo?
