WELCOME!
The owner, Manager and staff of the Woodville Day Nursery and
Kindergarten extend to you a warm welcome.
We are a family owned private centre which began operating in 1962 by
the late Mrs. G. Vreugdenburg.
Her passion was children and providing high quality care and education to
all children across our community. She was a proud devotee of many
organisations and sponsor groups.
Today, her son Robin Vreugdenburg, continues her work along with his
long standing Manager, Tanya, in providing a service of excellence.
We hope that you and your child/ren will feel safe, secure and happy at our
centre.
“Your family is our family”
PHILOSOPHY OF THE CENTRE
We believe that childcare is an extension of the family unit. Each family is important and
we aim to support parents in the care and upbringing of their children in a nurturing,
educational and diverse atmosphere.
We aim to explore and in engage in our community and provide children with the
knowledge and skills to become confident in their surroundings and challenges that
may arise.
Our Centre reflects the wide diverse cultures that reside in our community. We aim to
foster, educate, support and assist each individual child and their families to feel secure
in their environment.
We believe children feel responsible and rewarded when given opportunities of
leadership, freedom of speech, respect to their views and ideas and involving their
inputs and directions in our curriculum which is based on the child’s daily emerging
topics.
Our staff strives to become enthusiastic pedagogical teachers with their belief in Being,
Becoming and Belonging being their foundation.
We believe it is essential for each child to learn the importance of their culture,
environment, family background, diverse lifestyles of families in their social
communities and respect through nurturing plants and animals.
We believe our natural environment should be respected, learnt about and explored
through teaching the importance of its sacredness and including this in our curriculum.
Our centre ensures sustainable practices are embedded in our everyday routines.
Children learn through play experiences they are “Rehearsing Life”. Our curriculum is
responsive to each child’s needs and level of development. These reflect the principles
and practices of the National Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
Our centre seeks community involvement and believes it enhances our relationship
with the wider community by including and representing services and people that are
important to us.
We believe each child has his own potential, strengths, self-esteem and limitations
which enables them to solve their own problems, come up with solutions, understand
themselves and learn to cope with joy, grief, fear, failure, loss and different emotions
dealing in social environments.
We believe Holistic learning is based on child development and early Years pedagogy. In
providing holistic learning educators recognise that children are learning from
conception and develop in their own time and at their own pace.
We recognise the connectedness of mind, body and spirit. We pay attention to children’s
physical, personal, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing as well as cognitive aspects
of learning.
We believe Literacy and Numeracy are embedded in meaningful learning provided
through play-based experiences, investigations, inquiries and experiments. This does
not preclude intentional teaching

ENROLMENT
Parents must complete a detailed enrolment form prior to commencement at the centre.
Children enrolled at the centre are accepted on a 3-month trial basis. Should a child not
settle into our environment, then the parent/caregiver will be advised, as the child may
not be ready for childcare.
Should a child not settle into the routine of the centre, or comply with the centre’s
conditions, we reserve the right to terminate enrolment.
As part of the centre’s involvement in the childcare benefit to parents, the Federal
Government has some “Priority of access” guidelines the centre must adhere to should we
reach capacity. (Please see PRIORITY OF ACCESS GUIDELINES)
Children can be placed on our wait list. There is an administration fee of $30, which is nonrefundable.
When a vacancy occurs the first on our wait list to suit the vacancy will be offered a
position. Current children and siblings will be offered extra days and/or positions first.
ORIENTATION
Parents are required to follow the centre’s orientation process for new children.
This process allows children to be settled into the centre environment gradually
thus making the transition for the child from a home environment to a centre
environment as comfortable as possible.
Orientation times are arranged with your child’s Team Leader.
Each child will settle at their own pace. Your child’s Team Leader will advise you of
your child’s progress and ways in which you can help make the transition smoother.
Your Team Leader will also advise you when your child has finished orientation and
can then commence his/her full days at our centre.
FEES
A fee schedule covering various care situations is given out when making an enrolment
enquiry.
Fees are payable weekly, and are invoiced one week in advance of the current week.
Fees can be paid by direct transfer or cash only.
A bond of two weeks full fee is payable upon completion of orientation.
When your time at our centre ceases, we will return the bond. To receive the full bond you
must have your account up to date and have given the necessary two weeks notification to
cease care.
Fees are paid for a guaranteed place, not attendance. Once a permanent booking is
made. Should your child be away for any reason, your fees remain the payable.
(This includes public holidays and Annual leave up to three weeks then every week
absent after this will be billed at half price)
The centre closes at 6pm. A charge of $2 per minute will be added to your account for any
child collected after this time. We are only licensed until 6pm.
If fees are outstanding, and your child is absent without notification, the Management
reserves the right to allocate your placement to another child.
(Please see FEE SCHEDULE)
CHILD CARE BENEFIT AND CHILD CARE REBATE

Assistance Office will, upon application, assess your eligibility to the childcare benefit and
child care rebate.
You must contact the Family Assistance Office prior to attending childcare.
They will send a letter to you with all relevant information, which you must transfer onto
your enrolment form.
Until we receive confirmation from the Families Assistance Office to our accounting

Parents are required to sign their child in and out daily.
Upon arriving at the centre, parents note the time of arrival with your child and your
name and initials and the time of departure with your name and initials when you
come to collect your child.
PERSONS UNDER 18 YEARS OLD ARE NOT PERMITTED TO COLLECT CHILDREN.
COLLECTION OF CHILDREN
Upon collection of your child, the person in charge of your child’s group, or another staff
member, must know you are taking the child from the centre.
You must also sign the attendance register with the departure time.
Where someone other than the legal guardians of the child comes to collect a child the
following procedure must be applied;
 You must have written, on the collection authorization sheet, the name of the
person coming to collect the child and their address, phone number and
relationship to the child.
 If a change of plans has occurred during the day you must telephone the centre and
advise that someone other than the authorised person is coming to collect the child.
You must advise the persons name, telephone number, address and relationship to
the child.
 All people coming to collect children who are unknown to staff will need to produce
identification. No child will be released to an unknown person without showing
their identification.
 If a person is a regular authorized person you may add them to your enrolment
form. (They still need to produce Identification upon their first visit to the centre or
if the current staff on duty is not familiar with them) In this case you will not need
to continuously fill out our authorisation sheet.
UPDATING INFORMATION
It is important that the centre has the latest information as required on your enrolment
form. Any changes need to be notified immediately. EG: contact telephone numbers,
addresses and authorised person(s)
When you child is immunized, at varies age stages, please notify us with a copy of your
schedule so we can keep records up to date.
This is also a requirement from the Family Assistance Office, in order to continue to receive
your childcare benefit.
CHILD PROTECTION
The centre’s policy follows the guidelines as per the South Australian Child Protection
Council.
All of our staff are trained in Mandated Notification.
If you wish to read our policy please ask Management.
FIRST AID, ANAPHALAXIS AND ASTHMA MANAGEMENT
Our staff are trained in First aid, Anaphylaxis and Asthma Management.
They update their skills every three years.
Please discuss with your child’s Team Leader if your child has Asthma, allergies or any
other condition requiring medical treatment.
You will be required to provide all information from your child’s doctor such as Asthma
Management plan, Anaphylaxis plan and Allergy plan.
MEALS
Morning, afternoon snack, late snack and a nutritious lunch are provided.
Children should have breakfast before coming to childcare. However, breakfast, supplied
by parents, can be given to your child if they arrive early. Our breakfast time is 7.30am,
children arriving after that will need to have eaten at home.
If your child is regularly here early, you may choose to leave a packet of cereal at the
centre and when it runs low a staff member will inform you.
The centre believes water is best for children and offers that at every mealtime. In between
these times, children are to have a labeled water bottle from home, which is placed in your
child’s room’s trolley. The centre will place them in the dishwasher to sanitise at the end of
every day. (Kindy children are to take theirs home daily and bring again on their next day)
The weekly menu is pinned up on our notice board, located in the driveway as you arrive.
The centre provides special meals for children who have allergies or cultural
requirements. Please indicate your needs on your enrolment form. You will also be
required to fill out a dietary form which your child’s Team Leader will give to you.
The centre also provides a healthy snack at 5.15pm for toddlers and Kindy and 4pm for
babies. Some parents do not wish for their child to eat at this time as it may ruin their
appetite for dinner. Please let us know if you do not wish for your child to have this small
snack.
THIS IS JUST PROVIDED FOR CHILDREN BOOKED AFTER 5PM.
‘Junk’ food is not to be brought into the centre. We do however observe birthdays, and
would like to help celebrate your child’s special day. Please speak to your child’s Team
Leader about other ways your child can celebrate their birthday while at childcare.
Homemade food is not allowed due to the new Food Regulations 2002. All food must be
packaged if going to be shared among children.
DENTAL HYGEINE
Children who eat breakfast at the centre (breakfast being at 7.30) will brush their teeth
after this meal.
This is included in our “Dental” policy and is stipulated under the National Quality
Standards.
Can you please pack your child’s toothbrush in their bag or alternatively, you may leave a
toothbrush here. Please make sure your child’s toothbrush is in a toothbrush holder
container, sealable container or a multi use sealable bag EG: Sandwich bags.
The centre will provide low fluoride toothpaste for children. If your child has any
intolerance or allergies to children’s toothpaste, please provide your own for your child.
Please remember to label all bags and brushes.
IMMUNISATION
Parents have the right to decide whether to immunize their children or not.
However………..
Children not immunized will be excluded from the centre in case of an outbreak of a
vaccine preventable disease.
DISCIPLINE
Our staff believe that the best form of discipline is making their expectations clear to the
children. Children are apart of the rule making for their room. They decide what is
appropriate and not so appropriate behaviours. If a child behaves in an unacceptable
matter, he/she will be informed why their behavior is unacceptable. Staff will use a
“choice” and “Consequence” approach, which includes the child in the decision making and
recognising inappropriate behavior. Children are redirected if need be.
Children who inflict violence such as biting, hitting or kicking etc. may be asked to sit with
a staff member to think about their actions and why this kind of behavior is not
acceptable.
If a child has ongoing behavior issues, the Team Leader will chat with parents to find a
reason behind it and a solution to end this behavior. A Behaviour Management plan may
also be implemented.
Please see our BEHAVIOUR POLICY for further information.
ILLNESS AND ACCIDENTS
Every endeavor is made by our staff members to provide a safe environment and prevent
illnesses and accidents. In case of illness, you will be notified immediately.
Minor accidents will be noted in accident and illness register. If it is a head injury, staff will
notify you as per our first aid protocol. In an emergency, the centre will take the child to
the Woodville South clinic across the road. An ambulance will be called if required. The
centre will not be liable for any medical fees or transport costs that may be involved.
IF YOUR CHILD IS UNWELL, PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM TO CHILD CARE. THEY WILL
BE SENT HOME
(Please see ILLNESS AND PROCEDURES AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON ILLNESS)
Our centre does not administer pain-relieving medication such as Panadol and Nurofen, as
per the Woman’s and Children’s Hospital guidelines for child care & Department of
Education and training regulations.
We also do not allow children to stay at childcare if they have been administered a pain
relieving medication.
Only medication prescribed by a health care professional will be administered.
All medication must have a doctor’s script label on it. This includes nappy rash creams and
gels, which require a chemist-dispensing label.
(Please see CREAMS AND GELS)
Supervisors can administer medicines, upon request and must be written in the medicine
register. Please talk with your child’s Team Leader about protocol.
ROUTINES
Because there are large numbers of children to care for, it is necessary for a broad
timetable to be adhered to. However, staff endeavors to meet all children’s individual
needs. The babies room will follow children’s individual routines.
Please speak with your child’s Team Leader about their rooms routine.
EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK
Our centre implements the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).
The Framework puts children’s learning at the core
and comprises three inter-related elements: Principles,
Practice and Learning Outcomes.
All three elements are fundamental to early childhood pedagogy and curriculum
decision-making.
Curriculum encompasses all the interactions, experiences, routines and events,
planned and unplanned, that occur in an environment designed to foster children’s
learning and development. The emphasis in the Framework is on the planned or
intentional aspects of the curriculum.
Children are receptive to a wide range of experiences. What is included or excluded
from the curriculum affects how children learn, develop and understand the world.
The Framework supports a model of curriculum decision-making as an ongoing
cycle. This involves educators drawing on their professional knowledge, including
their in-depth knowledge of each child. Working in partnership with families,
educators use the Learning Outcomes to guide their planning for children’s
learning. In order to engage children actively in learning, educators identify
children’s strengths and interests, choose appropriate teaching strategies and
design the learning environment. Educators carefully assess learning to inform
further planning.
All young Australians become:
 Succesful Learners
 Confident and creative individuals
 Active and informed citizens.

ILLNESS
The community and the centre will from time to time be experiencing bouts of a variety
of illnesses, and in the best interest of everyone, we are taking this time to remind all
families of our policy on illness and medication.
If your child appears unwell, shows signs of illness or is contagious, we strongly advise
the child stays at home and visits the doctor. All children at the centre, who appear to
the staff to be unwell, will be sent home.
The following are some signs and symptoms that the centre will exclude:
 Temperature 38 degrees or higher, or under if showing signs of being unwell.
 Continuous, persistent cough.
 Gunk in eyes. (conjunctivitis)
 One bout of vomiting or diarrhoea (if we have an outbreak) Otherwise 2 cases.
 If the child doesn’t seem to be well.
 A rash.
As we have spoken to the Woman’s and Children’s Health Centre, we have been advised
to follow the handbook “Staying Healthy in Childcare”, and our National Quality
Standards, and this may differ from your GP’s advice. They also advised, doctors will
write clearance notes for childcare. (No family member can sign a clearance note for
your child) In the case you arrive at the centre without one, we will refer to the ‘Staying
healthy in childcare’ handbook, to clarify if your child is clear to stay. Although a doctors
note may be provided if it clashes with our policy or the staying healthy in child care
policy or the staff feel the child is still not 100% the staff may ask to take the child back
to the doctor to re evaluate.
Any illness which are highly contagious such as Chicken pox, Hand, foot and
mouth, impetigo, scarlet fever and all vaccine preventable illnesses require a
doctors certificate to return to child care.
Please be aware children must be 24hr medication and symptom free before they may
return. A child CAN NOT attend child care if they have been given pain
reliever/temperature relieving medication as it could be masking a more severe
symptom.
As children are run down with illness, medications maybe required. The centre can only
administer medication prescribed by a doctor. It must have the doctor’s label on the bottle
with clear instructions. Please advise staff if your child needs medication, and write it in
our medication book, located in the kitchen drawer. All medication should accompany a
clearance note from the doctor. Please ask for one, when you see the doctor. Usually, if
on antibiotics, they aren’t clear to return until 24hrs after starting the antibiotic.
Also please remember that nappy rash creams and teething gels need a chemistdispensing label.
If your child is “Prone” to conjunctivitis then we will need a letter (from your doctor) on
file that states your child is “Prone” to conjunctivitis and that you the parent have drops at
home which you administer. (Your child will still need to wait until all gunk has cleared for
24hrs) otherwise all cases require a clearance note if wanting to attend in the same week.
If your child has only one bout of vomiting or diarrhoea, they must wait 24hrs before
returning. If they have had more than one bout or there is a breakout (Note will be on
front door) at the centre then a doctor’s clearance note is required if wanting to return in
the same week.
All infections require a clearance note EG: tonsillitis, ear infection, croup, chest
infections etc. (If attending in the same week)
Our families, children and staff are our main priority, limiting illness is important to us,
and to stop the spread of infection, as per the National Quality Standards. In doing this,
we will eliminate the illness quicker and limit the need for parents to continue to take
time off work. By bringing in contagious, sick children, it only spreads infection to other
children and families. And so the cycle continues.
The centre will not tolerate rude, inappropriate behaviour from parents when speaking
with staff. The staff are to follow policy at all times and by you enrolling your child at
our centre you have agreed to abide by these.
Parents who display this kind of behaviour may be asked to vacate their position at our
centre.
We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.
Management
Handy Hint: You May want to keep a copy of this on your fridge
Jan 2015
Sometimes, there may be a waiting list for child care services and to ensure the system
is fair, the Australian Government has “Priority of Access Guidelines” for allocating places
in these circumstances. The guidelines only apply to Child Care Benefit approved child
care. They are used when there is a waiting list for a child care service or when a
number of parents are applying for a limited number of vacant places.
Every Child Care Benefit approved child care service has to abide by the guidelines and
tell you about them when you enrol your child into care.
Priorities



First Priority: a child at risk of serious abuse or neglect
Second Priority: a child of a single parent who satisfies, or of parents who both satisfy,
the work/training/study test under Section 14 of the 'A New Tax System (Family
Assistance) Act 1999'
Third Priority: any other child.
Within these main categories priority should also be given to the following children:









children in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
children in families which include a disabled person
children in families which include an individual whose adjusted taxable income does not
exceed the lower income threshold of $41,902 for 2013-2014, or who or whose partner
are on income support
children in families from a non-English speaking background
children in socially isolated families
children of single parents.
A child care service may require a Priority 3 child to vacate a place to make room for a
children with a higher priority. They can only do so if you:
are notified when your child first entered care that your service follows this policy
are given at least 14 days notice of the need for your child to vacate.

SPRING/SUMMER DRESS CODE
Our dress code is revised every year in accordance with the “sun
Smart” and “occupation Health and Safety Act.”
Children must wear closed in shoes and t-shirts while outside. We find
“Crocs” are really good, light, washable and allow air through. Target
has a cheaper version which covers the whole foot and come in a
range of colours. Just ensure your child has the strap at the back of the
foot, to prevent the shoe slipping off.
While inside, children can wear tank tops, open toed sandals etc.
You may want to leave a t-shirt and a pair of closed in shoes in your
child’s locker or drawer. That way, it is always here and your child can
still go outside, just ensure it is all labelled.
Please also remember your hats (No caps) and sunscreen if you wish
your child to wear it. Our centre has adequate shade, with sun sails up
in the playground, our trees and undercover areas. IT ISN’T THE
CENTRE’S RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE A HAT FOR YOUR CHILD.
It may also be helpful to the staff if your child comes in with sunscreen
already applied (if you strongly wish your child to wear it) as in the
summer months the children will go straight outside upon arrival.
If you need further clarification, please speak to your team leader or
Tanya.
Enjoy the sunshine!!!
FEES
Our fee schedule is outlined in a separate sheet provided.
Our centre is a private centre but we see ourselves as a not-for-profit. Our
intention is not to make money but provide a service to families and children that
is of the highest quality.
ABSENSES
You can be paid for any absence from approved care your child attends
for up to 42 days per child per financial year. Additional absences beyond
42 days for certain reasons may be approved and paid. Please talk to
Tanya about the additional absences.
Public holidays will be counted as an absence if the child would normally
have attended the service on that week day, and fees have been charged
for that day for the child.
PLEASE NOTE
Fees are payable whether your child attends or not. Payment is for YOUR
REGULAR PLACE, NOT ATTENDANCE.
(This means non-attendance due to illness, public holidays, annual leave
etc.) This assures your child’s place in the Centre.
Fees are required to be paid one week in advance of the current
week.
Account balance shown on your Family Statement is due and payable by
the end of the current week. Overdue accounts will incur a $5.00 per week
late payment fee.
Late child collection will incur a $2.00 per minute surcharge to cover staff
overtime costs.
PLEASE NOTE
As always we do not take fee increases lightly as we know the impact it can have
on family budgets. The changes in regulations, as from 1/01/2014, re
formalising teacher placement in childcare centres has impacted our budget as
we now have to comply with the teachers awards and not the childcare workers
awards for wage payments for our teacher. The other impact has been the
allocation of extra off floor time for staff to do programming paperwork. This
now includes 2 hours min per week for the teacher’s educational program and
another staff member for 2 hours to do the sustainability programming.
Increases in other overhead expenses have also impacted on the fees.
SUPER HERO POLICY
15/01/2008 - Re issued 20/08/2008-Revised August 2009- Revised Jan 2012
Revised August 2013 Revised Feb 2014 Jan 2015
Due to an increase in “rough play” and aggression among the children, we have decided
to reinforce our “super hero” policy.
As you may have seen in the advertiser, many child care centres have already
implemented a ban on super hero play and accessories. This is because it increases
rough play and aggression in children, as they act out that character. We as childcare
workers are against violence in any form.
We have implemented a total ban on super hero characters. This includes clothing,
hats, socks, underwear, bags, shoes and toys. We will also be stopping the children
referencing and acting out super heroes. These may include spiderman, batman,
superman, ninja turtles, superwoman, incredibles and the hulk.
We appreciate your co operation in this matter, as you can understand, we have a large
group of children to care for and all families have different opinions. In order to cater
for all needs, it’s appropriate to implement our policy.
We appreciate your decision to allow super hero play at home, but ask you to assist us
in making our centre a happy and safe place for children to be and not bringing those
items into the centre.
We appreciate your assistance
