Talking Green – Last month’s TG on the Sustainability of Historic Preservation had a great turnout of about 60 people at the
Library, and two amazing, inspiring speakers – Patrick Eidman of History Colorado who spoke for nearly an hour on the
topic, with slides of examples of marvelous old buildings made anew with just a few, affordable adjustments. A big take
away for us was his commentary on windows – and how the process of restoring old windows can actually be more efficient
and last much longer than purchasing new EE windows.
Zero Waste – 3 weekends left for the ZW season – 2 Sat Mkts, Oktoberwest, and Ditchfest.
Yampa Valley Recycles – Safeway Green Machines have now been discontinued. This was an outlet for people to recycle
Fri-Sun when WM and Milner weren’t open. So to fill that time, Waste Management will open their yard on Wednesday
until 6:30pm (M,T,Th,F hours are 8am- 4pm) $5 for up to 96 gallons for non WM customers (included for WM customers).
You can still also take recycling to Milner on Saturdays from 9a-3p. $1-5 depending on quantity.
As a part of their volunteer day, Smartwool and Alpine Initiatives have created shells for permanent recycling locations
downtown – more at http://www.yvsc.org/smartwool-alpine-initiatives-ssrc-yvsc-and-city-of-steamboat-collaborate-onnew-recycling-containers/
October 4th is our annual Drop Off Day – volunteers needed! Sign up with Emilie – recycle@yvsc.org – what will be taken
will be posted asap
Recycling feasibility study is underway, and report on that will starting next week.
Sustainable Schools – School is in session! Been prepping teachers and speaking at staff meetings on energy reduction and
waste diversion.
Green Building – Meeting set for this Friday – ideas welcome! Looking for historic buildings maybe?
The Green MLS – Sept 17th Weds, 1-3pm Citizens room – talking energy efficiency and home value, HERS ratings, and
financing options.
Green Gardens Tour – to Inspire individuals to grow – you’d never know these homes had such amazing gardens if you
drove by. This is their source of vegetables for 8 months of the year. Videos and pics posted this week!
VI. Partner Updates
1. City of Steamboat: Sonja Macys/Kenny Reisman/Casey Earp – Sustainability goals update:
Colorado Climate network and Colorado Municipal league forming working groups on resilience in the face of
climate change that SS is participating in on. Including Infrastructure, Natural Resources, Natural Recreation
and Public Health – more to come on that will wrap in Dec or Jan with a report)
Casey has gone thru all city documents that relate to sustainability – not just energy and waste, but open
space, water/stormwater, air quality, etc – and updating, prioritizing, and establishing a working group that
will come up with recommendations on how city can move forward. All fee that it’s very promising and
exciting that city is looking at this, there’s momentum that there hasn’t been in the years past. Props to Casey
for the amount of hours that he has put in to it.
City approved (5-2) resolution for Colorado Energy Office grant application for Electric Charging Station at the
10th Street location.
PLEASE Come share your thoughts on this on Sept 16th City Council meeting – please share that this is a
priority for our community.
2. Steamboat Mountain School Sustainable Agriculture School – Andy Ziegler: (Was Lowell Whiteman School)
Nearing completion of first greenhouse/composting facility on campus with aquaculture system as well. First
step in broader plan to include agriculture and growing culture on campus, that will include an outdoor
kitchen, community center, with the mission to utilize 160 acres for the community that Meg Morris (Head of
School) feels is very important. Funding program through the SAP Suppers – first one is Sept 26th, Autumn
harvest from Elkstone, Davis Farms, and Yampa Valley Farms (seating limited 48 seats) $100, 3 courses paired
with wine. Partnering with CMC intern program.
VII. Open Forum
1. Dalton Reed, Community Member – Tiny House (built on the chassis of a truck or a trailer) – Very
sustainable option – hauls his own water, composting his own waste, and makes his own power, all on the
footprint of 140 square feet – can be built for under $20,000. Downside is that it’s a temporary structure and
registered as a motor home. The only place it’s allowed is ag property, which are 35 acres or larger. Has been
struggling with county planning all summer per “living as camping.” 1000 square foot min. requirement for
building (pushed thru in 1960s) is also a deterrent.
On the agenda for tomorrows commissioner meeting – to change the definition

2. Josh Nass – Homelink Magazine – looking for article ideas for sustainable lifestyle education and
homeowner education
