Defining the importance of Asia

Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent – 49 countries, approx 4.3 billion people and 60% of world's population.

“Looking ahead, Asia must continue to build its “second engine of growth”—based on domestic investment and consumption—beyond its clear strength in exports, which it must not give up. On current trends,

Asia’s economy will be larger than the G-7 by 2030. So the message is clear: Asia has a growing stake in the global economy—and the global economy has a growing stake in Asia.”

Higher Education in Asia

Since the 1980s, higher education have developed rapidly in Asia and has been a logical consequence of booming economic growth in countries such as

Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea. Countries with less favourable conditions have also witnessed significant growth in higher education and educational quality improvements.

Several countries show ambition to establish as higher education hubs, and have set targets to attract more international students, increase higher education and research spending and internationalise their education institutions.

International Education Trends

OECD research reveals that over 50% of international students studying in countries which provided statistics came from Asia. China, India and Korea send the most, with the US, UK and Australia the most popular destinations.

Looking at QS data, we can see that Asian countries like Singapore, Hong Kong and even Malaysia also play host to large numbers of international students.

Interesting Fact:

In 2013, NUS took in >1,400 inbound international exchange students from

300+ overseas partner universities as part of our global education program. http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings-articles/world-university-rankings/increasenumber-international-students

Financing Your Education

Some key financial considerations:

• Tuition Fees and Living Expenses

– Subsidies for International Students

– General cost of living

• Freshmen Scholarships (availability of university and private organisations/donor scholarships)

• Financial Assistance (bursaries and loans to cover tuition fees and living expenses) based on family income and other mitigating factors

Interesting Fact:

The Singapore’s Ministry of Education provides a tuition subsidy (Tuition Grant) to all international students studying in publically-funded universities. Students who take up this subsidy are obliged to work for a Singapore-registered company for 3 years upon graduation (includes self employment).
