Dear Colleagues, 2009 ANNUAL REPORT

It seems like we just returned from the successful 26 th annual Pan-Pacific Conference in Shenzhen, China. The conference theme,

“Strategic Innovation Through Collaboration and Convergence,“ was most appropriate as today most organizations pursue the open innovation strategy. We had ample opportunities to share knowledge, collaborate on research projects, and converge new ideas with many colleagues from some 30 different countries. The Conference Organizing Committee did exceptional work in preparing the conference under the able leadership of Dean Zhimin Chen of the School of Management, Shenzhen University. The Welcome

Reception and Cultural Show were held at the Shangri-La Hotel with talented young musicians and dancers who demonstrated the beauty of traditional Chinese arts.

There were two keynote speakers in the Opening Plenary Session on June 1, 2009. Dr. Sang-Chul Lee, the former Minister of

Information and Communication and President of Kwangwoon University in Korea, elaborated the future opportunities and directions of information and communication technologies for organizational innovation. Professor Han Wei of Shenzhen University discussed the evolution of management thought in China, emphasizing the value of indigenous management development in China.

Another highlight of the conference was the Bali Night Special Event organized under the leadership of Ms. Nia Niscaya of the

Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia, and the support of Mr. Hermawan Kartajaya, CEO of Markplus, Inc., and Professor Jann

Hidajat of the Bandung Institute of Technology. Conference participants were gifted with traditional Balinese headdress, sumptuous

Indonesian food, and Balinese music and dance. Many participants joined the dancers in the finale, including yours truly.

Our 27 th annual conference takes us to Bali, Indonesia May 30 – June 2, 2010. The theme of the conference is “Managing and

Competing in the New World Economic Order,” a timely theme in view of tumultuous global economic changes. Our conference venue is the beautiful Grand Hyatt Bali on the beach in Nusa Dua. We were able to negotiate a truly wonderful package with the

Grand Hyatt managers for our conference participants. This conference offers several special features that all PPBA members may enjoy. During the Welcome Reception, Cultural Show, and the Opening Plenary Sessions, the PPBA will be joined by members of two other organizations: the UN Compact Asia Network and the Asia Marketing Association. On May 30, 2010, the Welcome Reception and Cultural Show will be hosted by the Ubud Royal Family at the Royal Ubud Palace. I have visited the palace twice and it is truly a beautiful place. On the evening of June 1, 2010, the second day of the Pan-Pacific Conference, there will be a special Indonesia

Night sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia.

During my visit to Bali in September of this year to prepare for the 2010 Pan-Pacific Conference, I met with representatives of all major universities in Indonesia, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism officials, MarkPlus Inc. executives, UN Global Compact officers, and my good friend, Professor Den Huan Hooi of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. We worked out all the necessary preparation steps for this year’s conference. We do expect a large number of our Indonesian colleagues to join us in Bali. All in all, we do expect that the Bali Conference may perhaps be the best one yet.

Bali, Indonesia

Local Climate: The months of May and June in Bali are considered to be in the ‘dry’ season. Average temperatures in June range from 19C to 31C or 67F to 88F with relative humidity of 60%.

Language: The primary language of Bali is Indonesian, known as Bahasa. Generally, Balinese people speak enough English to communicate basic information. You can also ask the hotel staff for a hotel card, and to write down your destination names in Indonesian so you can tell your driver where you wish to go. It is recommended that conference participants pick up an Indonesian phrase book which is very helpful when navigating through an unfamiliar language. There are a number of websites offering basic Indonesian vocabulary (practical and conversational phrases). Bahasa is one of the easier languages to learn and, of course, it is always beneficial for a traveler to know a few phrases in the local dialect, wherever you travel.

For detailed information about the many wonders of Bali you can google Bali, Indonesia. There is a great amount of information on the web regarding the arts, environment, geography, places of interest, culture, visa information and practical advice. The Lonely Planet website features up-to-date information and testimonies from recent travelers to Bali at www.lonelyplanet.com/indonesia/bali .

Visa Information: Conference participants should check the tourism websites for Bali to learn about visa requirements. A suggested website: www.baliguide.com/visa_regulations.html

. Depending upon which country you come from, you may not need a visa or may be able to apply for a visa upon landing in Bali.

Currency: The national currency in Indonesia is the rupiah. Money should be changed upon arrival at the airport or at a bank-affiliated currency exchange. ATMs are also available throughout Bali. For up-to-date exchange rates, we recommend using the following website:

The Universal Currency Exchange http://www.xe.com/ucc

Transportation: Taxis and rental cars are readily available in Bali. For the more adventurous, travelers can rent motorbikes or bicycles.
