Course Description:
Introduction to Business Skills Development is designed to help Bryan School freshmen
make the transition from high school to college. In BUS 105 we explore issues related to
creating a successful first year college experience. Additionally, BUS 105 introduces
students to lifelong employee skills that may determine their success as students at the
University and as entry-level employees.
Required Class Materials:
A. Articles and readings will be posted on blackboard and/or distributed in class.
B. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Undergraduate Bulletin, 20082009.
C. UNCG Student Calendar Handbook, 2008-2009
Learning Outcomes:
Students will understand and be able to demonstrate the following at the end of the
course:
1. Knowledge of University resources such as the Career Services Center, Bryan
Undergraduate Student Services Office, Bryan Career and Study Abroad Offices,
the Writing and Speaking Centers, Teaching & Learning Center (TLC), student
organizations, etc. that will empower students to find campus resources to
strengthen their chances of academic and professional success.
2. Knowledge of important milestones in higher education, such as joining academic
and/or fraternal societies, earning academic honors, preparing for graduation, and
exploring graduate and professional school opportunities.
3. Knowledge of the mission of the Bryan school and how the accreditation process
benefits the students.
4. Knowledge of the Bryan majors and minors and career opportunities through
class speakers, handouts, websites, and visits to campus resource centers, and
meeting with academic and faculty advisors.
5. Knowledge of skills imperative to success in learning, building relationships, and
personal development by engaging in activities that build group dynamic skills
and effective communication techniques.
6. Better application of the critical thinking process that will enhance academic and
career success. All applications of Bus 105 address this developmental ability.
7. Better understanding of algebraic principles and concepts to prepare effectively
for the required course of Math 115, College Algebra. Math 115 should be taken
next spring semester, and a minimum grade of C is required in that course.
Classroom Instructional/Learning Techniques:
Many different types of instructional methodologies will be used to enhance student
learning and participation. Such will include small group activities, group and class
discussions, basic research findings and oral reports in class by individuals and/or groups,
role playing, student visits to offices and departments on campus, blackboard
readings/assignments, and guest speakers, and in-class laptop assignments.

Instructions will be handed out in class on the 27th / 28th, and the assignment is
due that same day as soon as possible.
2. Upperclassman Interview
Sept 8 / Sept 9
5
Each student must interview one Bryan School upper level student whose major is one
you may be interested in pursuing. Your instructor will give you sample questions to use
for your interview, but students are encouraged to develop their own questions in order to
make this experience valuable. Students must work to find a student to interview on their
own. You may contact members of Bryan School student organizations as possible
interviewees.
3. Career Interest Assessment
Sept 22 / Sept 23
5
The UNCG Career Services Center offers several interest assessments to help students
determine career and professional choices. You must make an appointment with the
Career Services Center and complete one interest inventory. After completing the
assessment, print a copy and submit it to your BUS 105 instructor for credit. One of the
most popular interest assessments is Discover. Discover will give you a summary of
your interests and possible career matches. Do not wait until the last minute to complete
these assessments because access might be limited when the Career Services center is
busy, and too many students are rushing to the center during the same week. Remember,
late assignments will not be accepted.
4. International or Multicultural Event
Oct 1 / Oct 2
5
Both the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office of International Programs has
several events during the semester. Each student must choose an event of personal
interest, attend the event, and bring back a program or brochure from the event as proof
of attendance. Should the event not offer programs or brochures, obtain a signature and
job title of the person hosting the event and turn that in instead.
5. Resume
Oct 8 / Oct 9
10
You will need a resume not only for future employment opportunities, but also to apply
for part time employment, scholarships and internships while in college. Develop a
resume that appropriately reflects your experiences and education. The Career Services
Center in the EUC and the Bryan Career Counselor in 231 Bryan will help you design
and critique your resume. Make appointments with these career specialists as availability
may be limited. Should you not get help from these professionals, research and read
books about writing resumes and follow those instructions.
6. Algebra Review
Starts Oct 13 / Oct 14

See syllabus for the algebra review attached.
7. Attendance
Every Class Day
20
Attendance is a vital part of college success. Consistent class attendance is essential for
earning points in this course. Role will be called at the beginning of class. Latecomers
will be counted absent. In Mrs. Perry’s classes, two points will be deducted for each
absence. It is understood that students may miss class for sickness or personal issues.
However, unexcused absence will adversely affect your grade in Bus 105.
POLICY ON EXCUSED ABSENCES AND MAKE UP WORK:
Assignments are not accepted late. Late is defined as the instructor having collected the
assignment at the beginning of class. Excused absences and make up work are only an
option for students who have a legitimate reason for missing class. Such reasons include:
 Sickness that requires you to stay home. Bring a doctor’s note or one
from the university infirmary.
 Death of a family member. Proof may be required.
 Jury Duty. Proof is required.
 Military Duty.
 Religious Holiday.
The burden of proof is on the student. Final decision on the legitimacy of the excuse is at
the discretion of the instructor. If possible, make arrangements for make up work before
missing class.

Blackboard. If class is cancelled on an assignment due day, you should be prepared to
turn in the assignment the next scheduled class. Please check blackboard
everyday for changes in course plans or activities. Failure to do
so will not exempt a student from any changes over the course of
the semester.
Academic Integrity Policy:
In BUS 105, it is expected that each student will do his or her part of all work. In all
cases, every student should understand and abide by the University Integrity Policy.
Cheating or other integrity violations will not be tolerated, and University action will be
taken against any student who cheats or helps someone else cheat. Refer to the University
Academic Integrity Policy in the University of North Carolina at Greensboro 2008-2009
Undergraduate Bulletin, or the UNCG 2008-2009 Student Calendar Handbook, or the
website: http://academicintegrity.uncg.edu
Student Code of Conduct Policy:
As with the Academic Integrity Policy, all students at the University must understand all
aspects of the Student Code of Conduct Policy including but not limited to violations
under the code and subsequent sanctions that will be taken again all students found in
violation of this policy. Refer to the University Student Code of Conduct Policy in the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro 2008-2009 Undergraduate Bulletin, or the

What you can expect from the instructor:
As instructors of BUS 105 our role is to provide the opportunity for students to learn.
Based on our prior experience and research, we will introduce you to issues that have
a great impact on the success of students in higher education. You can expect that we
will:
Prepare for class.
Respect all students in the course, especially in regards to personal identity.
Challenge students to perform at their optimal level.
Act as a resource in regards to University issues and academic success practices.
Encourage students to incorporate their own ideas in creating useful and effective
activities for BUS 105.
Assist students to help them remain at the University and enter their sophomore
year with confidence and skills that will increase their chances of completing their
degrees and fulfilling academic and professional goals here in the Bryan School.
What we expect from students:
You are the most important part of successful learning in BUS 105. There are issues
that you must understand to create the outcomes you want from your University
experience. To help in that process, here are the expectations for students in BUS
105:


Students should come to class prepared. Some of your assignments will be completed
in class. However, to prepare for class, students should complete readings listed on
the class assignments list and view suggested web sites.
Students should respect themselves as well as others in class. That means students
should feel free to express their individuality in class as long as it does not infringe on
the rights of others and so that contributions are related to the classroom instructional

topics. Disrespectful comments will not be tolerated from any member of the class.
Furthermore, students must not only pay attention in class, but also look as if they are
paying attention. Behaviors, such as laying your head on your desk, sleeping,
chatting to others, texting messages or sending emails are not professional and will
not be tolerated.
You cannot use cell phones in class. Turn off your cell phone before you enter
class. You will be asked to leave class for the day if your cell phone rings in
class.
Students are not allowed to wear hats in class. Remove your hat before you come
into class.
Students should participate in class discussions. BUS 105 class discussions will help
students formulate their own opinions and increase their chances of learning
important material. If you are shy and have concerns about communicating in front
of the class, we will be glad to meet with you to develop a strategy that works.
Students should do their best!
In addition to the above expectations, review the faculty and student guidelines for
professional and ethical behavior by clicking on the following web address:

INSTRUCTORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MODIFY THE
ABOVE INFORMATION/ASSIGNMENTS/DATES, ETC. AS
NECESSARY. ANY SUCH CHANGES WILL BE POSTED
IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT SECTION OF BLACKBOARD.
