Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
At this time, we are beginning to focus on Palm Sunday,
Holy Week, the Tridiuum, and Easter as we approach this
most holy season. Father has asked our students to be sure to
wear some clothing to Church during these days so that people in our parishes do recognize the fact that Cathedral
students are good Christians.
As Christians, Holy Week comprises the high, holy week of the Catholic/Christian year. This is a reminder of our
salvation, given to us by Jesus, who literally died to save each of us. Since this time of the year is so special, it is our
task to model to the Catholic/Christian community our thanksgiving and our appreciation of this gift of salvation. As a
result, there will be no extracurricular activities-practices, scrimmages, games, dramatic productions, field trips or
academic contests with other schools after 5:30 p.m. on the Thursday before Easter (also known as Holy Thursday
or Maundy Thursday) or on all of Good Friday and all of Easter. (page 30 in our Blue Book)
On Thursday, April 7th, you received a survey about Academic Excellence at Cathedral High School. The deadline
for this survey is on Friday, April 15th. Please do respond. We appreciate and need your input into this vital
discussion. Here is the link if you have not filled it out yet:

Congratulations to Jay Ruckelshaus (’13), who was honored today as one of the Indianapolis Star’s Academic AllStars. From the State of Indiana, 40 students were selected for this prestigious award. Honored along with Jay
were his parents, Mary and John Ruckelshaus, and his favorite teacher, Mrs. Judy Birge. Jay and Mrs. Birge, we
congratulate you both on this great recognition.
Maddi Shake (’14) has been selected to perform with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in their
Side by Side program and will playing timpani. Here are the details: ISO's Side by Side concert is
Wed. April 27th, 7:00 pm. The concert is FREE; however a ticket is required and can be ordered by calling
Hilbert Circle Theater box office at 639-4300.
Maddi has been attending rehearsals since the beginning of March. The music is very challenging
and she is working hard! But most of all you should hear her talk about how proud she is to represent
Cathedral! Maddie, we are proud that you are representing us!
Congratulations to Christine White (’11), Grace Bennett (’13), and Michael Melbardis (’14) whose essays were
chosen as winning submissions in the Serra Club Vocational Essay Contest.
The competition is open to the entire Archdiocese of Indianapolis, with four students
chosen for the high school level. Each of these three students, their parents, and
their Theology teacher were feted at a luncheon on Monday, where the students read
their essays to the Serra Club Guests. These essays will be included in The
Criterion during the next few weeks.
Congratulations to the French Competition team of Cathedral High School for their achievements this past
weekend at the Indiana Association of Students of French 20th Congrès. The event was held at Martinsville High
School with over 225 students from across Indiana participating. Cathedral students did very well as this was the first year
in which they competed. With only 6 students on the team this year, they received 20 awards. The following students are
to be congratulated for their successes.

Again, congratulations to these students.
Congratulations to Social Studies teacher Jill Baisinger, who has just been notified that she received the James
Madison Fellowship. It is a scholarship program that pays for a master’s degree in American History, Political Science, or
Education. It is a very competitive program, where only 50 applicants get selected each year; one from each state.
Congratulations! She plans to study during upcoming summers for her Masters.
Congratulations to Katie Dapper (‘08), one of the princesses for the 500 Parade this year. To help her community,
Katie is encouraging mini marathon runners by passing out water and giving the motivational cheers and visiting grade
schools, high schools, and other community locations promoting the 500 as they celebrate the excitement of the race.
Congratulations to Paige Starkey (‘03), recently honored by an article in the Indianapolis Woman Magazine for April,
2011. The issue is not available on-line yet, but can be picked up for free at local grocery stores.
Congratulation to Bobby Powers (‘07), who was recently honored by this article in the Criterion. http://bit.ly/f4IDHV
Best wishes to Steve Rothkopf (’06), who will be competing for IU’s American Idol-type competition on Sunday,
April 17th at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Art in Indianapolis. Here’s the link if you’d like to check out the whole thing.

Announcements:
On Monday, March 14th, the Cathedral Connection Jr/Sr Parent Night was held. These parents gave us ten
questions to which they wished responses. The questions and responses are here:
DRAFT
CHS JR/SR PARENT MEETING 3/14/2011
QUESTIONS FROM PARENTS FOR THE ADMINISTRATION:
5
1.
Are there any plans for parent evaluation of teachers and classes?
At this time, there are no plans for this. Of course, this subject can be open for discussion, and parent input is welcome
in terms of the timely posting of grades and assignments, the prompt return of communication, etc.
2.
Why is our grading scale not in line with other private and public schools?
Research into the grading scales and grade weighting at various schools indicates a very wide variety of strategies and
approaches. Some of our Holy Cross counterparts use our grading scale or a slight modification of it. At Guerin High
School, an “A” is a 92. At many of our surrounding public schools, an “A” is a 90. Cathedral “raised the bar” many years
ago, and other schools followed suit. Parental pressure has caused some schools to lower their scales. The verdict is still
out, however, in determining if lowering the scale has caused an increase in the number of “A’s” earned by students.
3.
Does our grading scale give our students a disadvantage when applying
to college if compared to students from other high schools who have a
lower percentage grading scale? Is it more difficult for CHS students to
receive a state school scholarship which is based on Standardized test
scores and GPA?
Our college advisors will continue to monitor this situation. Given the very different requirements at every
university, it is entirely possible that in some situations, our students are negatively impacted. It is also
possible that our students are negatively impacted simply by being in an environment of very high standards
across the board. CHS is not an easy school. Kids who get average grades at CHS could probably be straight-A
kids at some other schools. But how much better are our kids prepared for the rigors and expectations of
college? We very seriously take the responsibility of keeping all possibilities open for our students, so we will
continue to consider any changes that might give our students an advantage as they anticipate their futures.
At this point, for students in our school, it doesn’t seem to have been more difficult for students to receive
state school scholarships which are based on GPA and scores. The table below, for example, shows the Class
of 2011 merit scholarship monies at IU. These awards total over half a million dollars, making us the top
earner in the state and number five in the country for earning merit awards at IU.

Do transcripts have letter grades or percentages?
Our transcripts have letter grades, but the grading scale is included on the transcript.
5.
When teachers write tests are they ever on a curve?
We need to be careful with this verbiage . . . grading on a curve means that the same number of students earn
F’s as earn A’s, and the same number of students earn D’s as earn B’s, and the majority of the students earn
C’s. Most Cathedral students and parents would not look favorably on this. Does this question mean, “Do
teachers artificially inflate test scores if students don’t do well?” In some cases, this happens. Our teachers
are professionals who have high, but reasonable, expectations of their students. Many of our teachers have
been teaching for several years, so they have the advantage of comparing student performance over a long
period of time.
6.
Is there professional development for teachers who teach AP classes?
Yes, teachers of AP courses are required to attend AP conferences in their subject area every three years, at a
minimum. Many of our teachers attend more regularly than that. We are fortunate that Butler University
offers an AP conference every year, and this gives our teachers the opportunity to network and to share best
practices with other local AP teachers. There are also many professional development opportunities in
Chicago each summer, and one of our teachers has been invited to grade AP exams with other AP teachers
from around the country.
7.
What is the school/teachers doing to prepare students for AP exams?
The curriculum is established, and our teachers are expected to follow it. Most teachers give “practice” AP
exams and/or questions based on material that is provided by the College Board. Some teachers set aside a
full three hours on a weekend or in the evening, so that students get the “feel” of taking a three-hour exam.
Many teachers make use of “AP-prep” books. Most teachers spend the last days before the AP exams
reviewing topics sure to be covered on the exams, but it isn’t possible to cram for these very comprehensive
exams. Student preparation is key to student success. In many cases, these exams are the most
comprehensive exams the students have ever taken. Studying on their own is required and necessary. Please
encourage your students to review, review, and review some more on their own. It is also important for
students to be well rested before taking the exams.
8.
What are the statistics for students’ scores on AP exams? How many
pass or fail?
7
AP exams are graded on a 1-5 scale. Recently, legislation has been passed that requires state universities to
accept scores of 3+ for credit beginning with the May 2011 exams. This credit does not have to be granted in
the major field, but it does have to count as at least elective credit. For example, a math major who earns a
“3” on the calculus exam and a “3” on the psychology exam will probably be given psychology credit, but even
though he will receive elective credit for the math AP course, he will probably have to retake calculus since it
is his major area.
Currently, just over half of our students who take AP exams score at or above a “3.” Our students, teachers,
and administrators are working hard to improve this statistic. Understanding what factors might contribute to
our current percentage will help us to improve it. First, every student who takes an AP course is required to
take the exam. (In some schools, students are given credit for taking the courses, even though they do not
take the exam.) Second, for most courses during the junior and senior years, any student who really wants to
take the AP course can do so. That means that our AP students are often students who have not been in our
honors track and therefore, they have not been previously exposed to the rigors of this level of work. Third,
the increased requirements for the Indiana Core 40 with Honors Diploma have pushed more and more
students into AP courses. These requirements require kids to take AP classes and the exams, but their scores
don’t matter to qualify for the diploma. Unfortunately, many of our students go into their AP exams thinking
that the scores don’t matter, so they don’t prepare or take the exam seriously. Ultimately, it is the quality of
the student’s personal preparation, along with the quality of his classroom instruction, that will make a
difference in his score.
9.
When scheduling senior retreats is the school calendar of the week
before and after the retreat taken into consideration for students making
up coursework? For instance, the retreat in January was the week of
MLK which gave seniors on retreat a whole week off (less continuity of
classwork). The February 15-18 retreat was the week before
Shamrauction. The week of Shamrauction some retreat students missed
school on Wednesday to set up and Friday with no school really breaks
up the week for continuity of classwork.
Yes, of course our school schedule is taken into serious consideration when planning our senior retreats. However, we
also have to work with the retreat center’s schedule of availability. We have to fit 6 retreats into our schedule each year
without having more than one in any given month and yes, this is a difficult task. We carefully consider all possibilities
before scheduling. For example, we have always had a retreat the week of MLK day for a couple reasons: 1) it is
necessary to have a retreat in January in order to fit all of our retreats into the school year without going too late in the
semester and 2) by having it the third week in January, teachers and students have enough time to re-acclimate
themselves after Christmas Break without much disturbance to their class schedule. We consider the dates for each
retreat carefully and do the best that we can to schedule them in times that best fit the schedules of our students and
teachers.
10. Why
are photos from students' spring break trips in the Cathedral year
book? (The trips that aren't school sponsored.)
8
From the Yearbook Editors: As the yearbook is to record the year and our students’ lives throughout the year, we find it
necessary to include all sort of events in which our students are involved. If one were to look back at previous Cathedral
yearbooks, one would see several events other than school sanctioned ones, such as summer life and popular music of
the time and even sophomores obtaining their drivers licenses. We think that various destinations of travel are
interesting to be viewed by the student body.

The new date and speaker will be announced in next week’s parent email!
New Project: Used Uniform Clothing Sale
I’m part of the Mom’s club and am spearheading a Used Clothing Sale project that I hope to continue for many years to
come. Your name was given to me during our Mom’s club board meeting as the ‘go to’ person that sends out news letters to
the JR and Sr classmen. Would you be able to put something in your next newsletter requesting donations of gently used
uniforms? These can be turned in to Mr. Greer in the front office. We would need to have the size of the item readily
viewable - (permanent marker, paper pinned to garment, etc.) so that we can sort by size and whether boy or girl.
The goal is to have used clothes available for purchase at the same time as the used book sale each year.
If there is anything else you need from me, please drop me a note, call me at my office (phone number below) or call me on
my cell phone: 416-8261.
Thanks, Marci Taylor

This past weekend the Cathedral Orchestra and the Bishop-Chatard Band and Orchestra, combined for a field trip.
The students attended a performance of the Chicago Symphony, participated in an exclusive Orchestral master
class with Dr. Robert Hasty at Northwestern University,
just for them, and performed at the field museum.
I want to say THANK YOU to everyone for an amazing
trip to Chicago this past weekend!! We had great
performances, wonderful chaperones (Kim Dooley, Shawn
Goodman, and Mark & Suzan Rohe), and the students all
represented our school and values with the utmost pride. I
was honored to be their director. Thank you so much to
everyone for a job well-done!

Has your dream always been to attend the Academy Awards? How about having the opportunity to test drive a car
of your dreams?
If so, you're in luck! This is a short, fun, volunteer job for both the Moms and Dads out there!
We are looking for volunteers for Valet Prom Parking on Saturday night, April 30th in front of the WAC at
Cathedral. Volunteers can be from the Any Class of Parents. This is a dream job and your only chance to see
how great our kids look when they are cleaned up and looking they're best. Your commitment is for a very short
window of time, leaving you free to go out to dinner with friends, either before or after, making it your own "date
night." Here is what we are looking for:
EARLY SHIFT - FROM 5:45-7:30pm at the latest!
1 Golf Cart Driver (to drive our volunteers that park cars, from the Hill to the WAC to park more cars)
30 people needed to park cars for our young men and women
8 people needed to help with check-in of our kids
1 person to put keys on the keyboard
2 people to help run the keys to the keyboard
LATE SHIFT - FROM 11:45 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.
8 people to work check-out
We need as many hands on deck as we can and prepare yourselves for a fun evening. This is a favorite volunteer
job at Cathedral and we have had many parents who do this every year. For you freshman and sophomore parents,
this is a great opportunity to see firsthand that Cathedral KNOWS how to do prom and do it right! In essence, you
are "paying forward" for when your own son or daughter goes to prom.
Please e-mail Linnae Peat with what position you would like to fill ASAP at Linnae@thepeats.com
Feel free to call Linnae at 855-8321 or Becky Bechtel at 432-4103 with any questions you might have. Thank you in
advance for caring for our kids and making their night extra special with "valet" parking.

STUDENT / ATHLETE PARTICIPATION
11
Effective immediately, advocated by Methodist Sports Medicine/IU Health, the sports medicine provider for
Cathedral Athletics, we will be adopting a new policy with regard to the timing of the completion/on file in Athletic
Office of the IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (annually) and HIPAA (one time for four years) forms. The
attached document outlines the new policy.
Summary: Before any CHS student/athlete can participate in any preseason conditioning session,
weight training, tryouts or any physical activity associated with Cathedral Athletics, they must
have both forms on file with Maureen Sullivan in the Athletic Office. For the safety of the athlete and
to help relieve personal liability, coaches should not allow any athlete to participate in any physical activity
associated with their sport at any time.
The basic premise behind the “moving up” of the timing of this process is it just makes sense to
have the kids medically checked out BEFORE they begin any strenuous physical activity
associated with sports at Cathedral High School and not wait until the beginning of the actual designated season. It
also allows for some lead time, if a previously unknown/undiagnosed medical condition does exist, to help eliminate the risk
of physical participation and begin the course of treatment for the condition, to get them ‘back playing’ as soon as possible.

End-of-Course Assessment (ECA) Information:
The week of May 16th Cathedral will be administering End of Course Assessments (ECA) in English 10, Algebra I
and Biology. All students enrolled in English 10 and Biology 1 will take the ECAs for those courses. Students enrolled in
Algebra will take the ECA if they have not already received a passing score on the exam. Students who need to retest in
Algebra I and English 10 will also be testing this week.

The Spring Phoning for Dollar$ phonathon begins next week and runs for 7 weeknights:
April 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, and 20.
We’re seeking responsible student-workers for the phonathon team who will step up to give a few hours to help Cathedral.
I’m looking for students who love Cathedral, would represent Cathedral well on the phone, and who would not be shy in
calling and talking with alums about supporting the Cathedral Fund.
 Students of all grade levels may work one, several or all evenings.
 We provide training, support and encouragement, an easy calling script, and plenty
of pizzas/snacks each evening.
 Students call from CHS offices from 6:30 to 9:00 each night. Staff members will be
there to encourage and answer questions.
 Service hours will be awarded to phonathon workers!
 Students are usually surprised at how fun and easy this is. Those who enjoy fun
and spirited competition will like this.
14

Prizes are awarded each evening, and larger prizes ($25 to $250) are awarded to the most successful callers over
the 7 nights of the phonathon.
Interested students should contact me at dszymanski@cathedral-irish.org or stop by the Advancement Office (across from
the Counseling Center in Kelly Hall). I need as many workers for the team as possible, but interested students must
contact me first. (I must make sure I have enough offices and phones!)
 Our fall phonathon team raised over $27,000 during 7 nights last October, and we need another great team to step
up for Cathedral for April!
 PLEASE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Letter sent to parents and guardians by email during the week prior to spring break.
Dear parents and guardians:
At this month’s meeting of Cathedral’s Board of Directors, the group approved a 4 percent tuition increase for the
2010-11 school year. Tuition for next year will be $11,240. This increase represents our intent to be deliberate and
controlled in tuition growth, yet still allows us to provide competitive salaries to our very talented teachers; to be
consistently on the cutting edge of technology needs and classroom advancements; and to continue to offer the
types of programs and services that insure we will remain committed to our mission of providing our diverse student
body the very best experiences in all facets of their growth and maturity.
We are sharing this information with you, as we work to continually update you on the re-enrollment process for our
current families for next year. In an effort to be good stewards of your tuition dollars, as well as of the
gifts our many donors have given, we are moving to a paperless system that will allow us to increase
efficiency, reduce paper consumption, and increase data accuracy.
15
In April, you will be receiving detailed instructions on how to re-enroll your child(ren) for next year. Once that
information is distributed, and the enrollment window has opened, members of our IT department will also be
available by appointment for families who wish to have some assistance with the re-enrollment process.
Families will still have four payment options available – a) one lump sum by early June; b) one-half payment in June
and the second in January; c) a quarterly payment plan; and d) a monthly payment plan. Numerous ways to pay are
also available.
For answers to more questions you may have, click here <http://www.cathedral-irish.org/uploaded/ReEnrollment_FAQ_Sheet11.pdf>.
We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we move forward with what we believe will ultimately be a timesaving and money-saving endeavor for you and Cathedral High School. As always, we welcome your feedback and
would like to answer whatever questions you may have. Please contact Jean Harris in our business office at (317)
968-7312 or via email at jharris@cathedral-irish.org for more information.

Cardiac Screening available for student athletes grades 7 – 12.
As a service to you, Cathedral High School and Heart Partners of Indiana have partnered to offer a cardiac
screening to student athletes grades 7 – 12. The screening will consist of an echocardiogram (echo) which is a
safe, diagnostic and painless test that uses ultrasound to examine the heart.
 Echo provides a great deal of information regarding heart chamber size, chamber function and valvular motion and
function. A cardiologist will be on-site to answer questions as well. A nominal fee of $20 will be charged for the
screening.
 Our limited screening will take approximately 15 minutes with emphasis to rule out the major cardiac conditions that
can affect young athletes such as:
Marfan Syndrome
Mitral Valve Prolapse
Aortic Stenosis
Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM)
 The results will be communicated to you by telephone or sent directly to your family
physician within two weeks.
 Screening Details:
Date: Wednesday, April 27, 2011
Time: 5:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Location: Cathedral High School in Basement rooms 4131 and 4141
 Females should wear sports bras for their screenings.
 A limited number of screenings are available. Therefore, appointments are required. For further information, or
to schedule an appointment, please call Heart Partners at 317/863-6007 or go on line at

Service Outreach News:
23
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
In Lent, we continue our journey of prayer, service, almsgiving and fasting and offer our service actions as a cornerstone for
reflection and giving:
Class Service Projects Let us petition in this Lenten time to be given the wisdom to recognize our poverty and the
compassion to share its treasure with our brothers and sisters. Our actions during Lent especially focus on service, as we
aspire to genuinely give to others. On Wednesday, April 13, our sophomores will cook and serve a spaghetti dinner at
Anna’s House for the local families who are being supported in their ESL classes and other development in their community.
Another USO trip is planned for Saturday, May 7 to Camp Atterbury. On May 11, we will assist again at Anna’s House and
on May 14, we will serve lunch at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. These April and May projects are on-going expressions of
ministry and giving. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities.
Habitat/Outreach Spring Break Mission Trip to South Carolina. Our celebration dinner is Monday, April 18th in the SLC
at 6:30 PM. See you there for the fun salute of our good works! Family members are invited as well as our hard working
Spring breakers!
Kids Against Hunger Marathon Event Kids against Hunger of Central Indiana is excited to announce that on Saturday,
April 16, 2011 they will be hosting their first annual Pack-a-thon at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville. They
plan to pack up to half-a-million meals during three 2-hour shifts that will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM. This food
will be distributed locally through Gleaners & Midwest and globally to orphanages in Haiti and Africa. They are enlisting the
help of over 1,000 individuals, families, and groups to pack meals on as many as 40 lines and cannot have a successful
Pack-a-thon without the support and cooperation of MANY people. They invite us to help spread the word about this event
and refer friends and acquaintances to their web site to register to pack. As well, they are asking each of us to register to
pack for this worthy cause, as all of us join together to make a huge difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Thank
you for your commitment to Kids Against Hunger! Here are informatory links for the Website and Registration link. Look
for the Packathon information. Consider assisting on this important event. Junior Conner Ruhlman and a few other
Cathedral students will be there assisting. Join them in this important endeavor.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hour detail and summary by year. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were
due December 1, 2010 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11,
freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2011. The service hours for all students has been
shown on their third quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by March 1, hours earned
after March 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis
as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service

For details about these service opportunities, this chart and other links on the Cathedral web site, click here If you
have other problems with the linked documents, please proceed to the website to access links from the Service
Opportunities area
under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11 are due on March 1,
2011. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2010-2011 were due on December 1, 2010. Click here for
the 2010-11 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2009-10 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
30
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

College Information:
We mentioned to you in August the Senior Survey where you record any merit scholarships you were offered and list your
college of attendance. This information is used for the graduation program and other Cathedral publications. It is now
available for you in your senior mailboxes, a copy is attached here as well, and it is on the CHS website as well.
Completing the survey is REQUIRED. If we don’t get a survey your information cannot be included in the graduation
program.
We realize that some of you have not made your decisions yet or heard back on all scholarships. This is to get you started
and give those who do know their decisions to get this completed. We will ask that all surveys are turned in to your college
advisor by April 15th. This gives us time to organize the information and get it to the printer.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation, and please see your college advisor if you have any questions. Here is the
survey: http://www.cathedral-irish.org/upload...lty/kpivonka//Senior_Survey_2011.docx
If your son or daughter is interested in a summer internship or college experience, please visit the Guidance page
of the Cathedral website. Under “General Information,” there is a tab for “Summer Programs.” Please check weekly as
new programs are always being added and several deadlines are approaching!

Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-11-11) - Property of Billy Shepherd Sports and presented by the NFHS
32
This past week I attended the final game of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship in Houston, Texas. For the
second straight year my alma mater, Butler University, was competing for the national championship.
 Have you had the experience of competing for a conference championship or state championship? If so, how did it
feel? Win or lose, I'm sure you enjoyed the experience.
 The nice thing about high school sports is that you don't have to be a state power to enjoy the season. Take time to
enjoy the moment and cherish those lasting friendships that you are forming with you teachers, coaches,
teammates, and people in your community!
For more on the student-athlete go to www.askbillyshep.com and www.nfhs.org.

Meditation: John 8:31 - 42
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
34
Jesus is the only way to true freedom. He won that freedom for us by dying on the cross, putting to death sin and everything
else that keeps us in bondage. But like the Jews in today’s Gospel reading, we don’t always understand what it is that is
enslaving us.
Perhaps you live with a nagging sense of guilt, even when you’re trying to do your best and have no reason to feel guilty.
Maybe a pervasive sense of fear or anxiety has gripped your life, keeping you up at night or afraid for the future.
Or maybe you struggle with negative feelings about yourself. We can become so accustomed to these feelings that we start
to believe they are part of us, and we can’t imagine living without them. But you don’t have to live with them—Jesus has set
you free!
Maybe anger is so deeply buried in your heart that it clouds your relationships and your outlook on life. Know that you can
bring this anger to the Lord and ask him to release you. You don’t have to hold on to resentment and unforgiveness —Jesus
has set you free!
Maybe you are bound by an addiction to food, alcohol, or drugs. Even activities like watching television, shopping, or surfing
the Internet may be taking up too much of your time and energy. Jesus doesn’t want anything to control you. He is more
than capable of satisfying your deepest needs. Jesus has set you free!
Today, take steps to lay hold of the freedom that Jesus has won for you. Let Jesus’ promises in today’s Gospel give you
hope. Read them over and over again, letting them sink deeply into your soul. Then ask the Lord to help you detect anything
that is binding you up. Finally, exercise your faith by asking Jesus to free you. Be bold and persistent! You may even want
to ask some trusted friends to pray with you. Remember: Jesus loves you so much that he laid down his life for you. He
wants nothing less than for you to walk in his freedom, each and every day of your life.
“Jesus, open my eyes to the things that bind me up. Give me the faith and the courage to taste the freedom you
have won for me.”
