Ballet: highly technical form of dance; French terminology; tutus
Jazz: along with jazz music, originated from vernacular dances of Africans when they
were brought to the Americas on slave ships
Ballroom: set of partner dances for competition and socialization; strict rules; fancy
costumes
Modern: rejected the strict rules of ballet
Tap: uses special shoes with metal on the bottom
Hip Hop: street dance, African influence
Broadway: includes singing, acting, and dancing; in New York City
Cultural: dance that shows the culture of a certain area; from a certain people
Improvisation: to create quickly; not planned ahead of time
Creative Movement: exploration of movement
Choreography: to create a dance; put movement together
