Police Officer Duties: Prevent and suppress crime; protect life and property; apply appropriate use of force options; pursue fleeing suspects; perform rescue operations; prepare reports; identify significant crime trends; determine reasonable suspicion to detain and probable cause to arrest; engage in community and problem oriented policing strategies; operate law enforcement vehicle, willing to work day and night shift assignments and communicate effectively with the public. Applicants must successfully pass the North Carolina Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) prior to final offer of employment and must be able to pass the POPAT semi-annually as a condition of employment. All new hires and transfers from other agencies must serve a 12 month probationary period. 80% score on annual firearms qualification. 70% score is the minimum per NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. An Associate’s Degree or higher education level is preferred for this position. Strongly prefer completion of the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training program or are otherwise eligible for in-state or out-of-state transfer. In-state police officer transfers must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer in the state of NC or be eligible for the 98 hour program, which includes passing the state exam in its entirety. Out-of-state police officer transfer applicants must have at least 2 years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience. Transfer candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered for lateral entry. Out-of-state transfers cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year. All out-of-state candidates will have to complete 98 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC Certification and pass the state exam. Valid driver license required at the time of application. Human Resources will screen each application to ensure its completion, and then submits approved applications to the Police Department. 3. The department reviews and conducts a preliminary records check on each application. Candidates are considered for initial written testing, consisting of the TABE and POST tests, and notified in writing when a time and date is set. 4. Candidates who pass the written tests are considered for an interview and notified in writing when a time and date is set. 5. The initial interview is conducted by members of the department patrol division, command staff and the hiring coordinator.
