Human Cloning Kristian Wilks & Jordan Nevejans 5th Hour What is Human Cloning? Human cloning is the creation of copy of a human with the same DNA as the original of a pre-existing human using their DNA Terms • Clone: Duplicate of an organism having the same DNA • Embryo: Unborn animal still developing • Ovum: Also known as an egg, it is the female reproductive cell • Stem Cell: Able to turn into any cell Brief History • Clones have existed in nature since animals have existed • “Nature’s clones” are identical twins • Scientists discovered cloning in the 1880s • First animal cloned was a frog in 1952 (Cloning Fact Sheet) Natural Example • Identical twins • 1 fertilized egg splits into two embryo Types of Cloning Embryo Cloning Cells are extracted from fertilized embryo, grown into separate embryos with the same DNA, and a twin is produced (Robinson) Reproductive Cloning Nucleus is extracted from a cell and placed into an ovum. From there it is placed in a womb and grown into a new animal Therapeutic Cloning Stem cells are removed from the embryo and are used to produce new tissues or organs for transplants, but the embryo is killed Pros of Cloning Pros • Can be used to grow organs and tissues for transplants (Cloning Fact Sheet) • Stem cells can be extracted and used for research to cure diseases (Cloning Fact Sheet) Pros Continued • Families who have lost children could clone the child using left over DNA • Clones could be used to study genetics and help us better understand how genes work and fix defects within the genes Cons of Cloning Cons • Animal cloning is easier than human cloning & only about 1-2 successful clones are produced for every 100 experiments (Cloning Fact Sheet) • Embryos are killed in the process in some cases (Cloning Fact Sheet) Cons Continued • 30% of current clones are born with a defect called “large-offspring syndrome” (Cloning Fact Sheet) • Humans have never been successfully cloned by growing a clone from human DNA (Cloning Fact Sheet) THE END!
