Name: Nadia Stevenson Date: 19/2/14 UNIS Hanoi The Cloning of Living Things For this essay I have chosen to discuss cloning animals. Scientists are cloning animals to improve quantities and quality of animal products. They are trying to develop animals that produce more milk, meat or wool than regular animals. Scientists are hoping that they would clone animals that produce better quality wool, meat or milk. The demands of cloning animals are increasing because of countries over population and the need to keep up with the demands this causes. Science is used in cloning by pulling the DNA from the original zygote and throwing it out; so the scientists are able to take DNA from an animal that they want to clone and place it into the egg. Then they would put the egg back into the original animal and wait for the clone to be born. One of the most famous animals to be cloned was Dolly. Dolly was a sheep born in 1993 and died in 2003. Dolly was cloned from an Adult cell which is more difficult than from a zygote. When scientists working at Roslin Institute in Scotland produced Dolly, she was the only lamb that was born from 277 attempts. She was a major story around the world. Dolly the sheep was a great break through with science and scientists are starting to make cloned cows and horses. There are positives and negatives to cloning animals. The positives are that; the producers would have more stock from the animal that has been cloned or the cloned animals might have more meat or wool. If science can build animals that have enhanced product abilities than we will be able to make more products for our over populated world. In addition scientists will be able to clone an animal or plant that might be going extinct and we can save it. The negatives are that the outcome of cloning is less than 20% of the animals they try to clone actually develop. Another concern is cloned animal could have a disease that scientists haven't discovered that lives in the animal, than if the clone develops it would pass down the diseased bacteria through the gene pool until the animal won’t be able to reproduce. I have chosen to focus on the Political factors about cloning. Citizens are protesting about cloning animals and are afraid that it will lead to cloning humans. President Obama is strongly against cloning "It is dangerous, profoundly wrong, and has no place in our society, or any society." – President Obama. A lot of people feel that cloning is unnatural and goes against the laws of nature. People are concerned that if scientists clone an animals that they would own the whole species. Governments and scientists need to be aware of the citizens’ concerns and proceed carefully. Name: Nadia Stevenson Date: 19/2/14 UNIS Hanoi Work Cited Batra, Karen. "Process of Cloning." The student: i. 1-2 ii. iii. iv. is able to state the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or issue is able to state the implications of the use of science and its application in solving a specific problem or issue interacting with a factor attempts to apply scientific language to communicate his or her understanding but does so with limited effectiveness makes little attempt to document sources. The student: i. 3-4 ii. iii. iv. is able to outline the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or issue is able to outline the implications of the use of science and its application in solving a specific problem or issue interacting with a factor is able to apply scientific language to communicate his or her understanding but does not do so clearly or precisely attempts to document sources correctly. The student is able to: i. ii. 5-6 iii. iv. outline and summarize the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or issue describe the implications of the use of science and its application in solving a specific problem or issue interacting with a factor apply scientific language to communicate his or her understanding clearly and precisely but does not do so consistently document sources but does not always do so correctly. o o o No GMO technology was listed No factor of the use of that technology was discussed No scientific terms were used to explain how technology is used in GMOs o I have listed how my chosen example works and identified and stated I have listed ideas of how my chosen technology has impacted one factor. They are not explained I have tried to use scientific terms to explain how my GMO technology works I have copied and pasted my URL’s / I have not attributed any photos o o o o o o o o o o o o The student is able to: i. 7-8 ii. iii. iv. describe the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or issue describe and analyze the implications of the use of science and its application in solving a specific problem or issue interacting with a factor consistently apply scientific language to communicate his or her understanding clearly and precisely document sources completely. o o o I have briefly explained my chosen GMO technology I have briefly explained how my chosen technology impacts one factor. I missed the positive or negative aspects of the technology I have used some scientific terms to explain my ideas but there are some unclear areas I have documented some sources of information and attributed photos, but there are many errors I have briefly explained and given the major points of how my chosen GMO technology works I have briefly explained and given the overall summary of how my chosen technology impacts one factor. I have briefly explained both the positives and negatives associated with my technology For the most part, I have used scientific terms clearly and precisely to explain my ideas. I have used Easy Bib to document my sources and attributed photos but there are a few minor errors I have given a detailed account of how my chosen GMO technology works I have given a detailed account of how my chosen technology impacts one factor. I have broken down the ideas and addressed each part. I have clearly discussed the positive and negative aspects of my technology Throughout the essay, I have used scientific terms clearly and precisely to explain my ideas. I have recorded all relevant sources of information and attributed all photos in a correctly formatted works cited.
