The 6 Components of Skill-Related
Fitness
Recap from Last Lesson
• Can you remember the Mnemonic you came up with last lesson to remember the 5 components of health-related exercise?
• C
• M
Cardiovascular
Muscular Strength
• M
• F
Muscular Endurance
Flexibility
• B Body Composition
• Can you think of a sports person who relies heavily on one of these components and explain why?
• Know the 6 aspects of Skill
Related Fitness
• Understand how they relate to physical activity
Your Task
• Watch the following 6 videos and decide which skills you think the sports person is demonstrating.
• There could possibly be several correct answers but can you think of the skill that is
MOST IMPORTANT ?
• Divide your whiteboard into 6 and write your ideas as you watch the videos.
• Remember! You are looking for the MOST
IMPORTANT skill.

Video 1 - Rugby
• Agility Video 1
• While running to score a try in rugby, to dodge tackles, players must be able to change the direction in which they are running
• To do this they need good agility otherwise they would fall over, trip or simply not be able to do it so quickly.
• Agility – the ability to change the position of the body quickly and to control the movement of the whole body.
Video 2 - Gymnastics
• Balance Video 2
• While competing in a beam competition a gymnast must hold their bodies completely still in difficult positions in order to receive high marks from judges.
• They must have good balance whilst they are still and whilst they are moving along the beam.
• If they do not have good balance they will, wobble, shake or even fall.
• Balance – the ability to retain the centre of gravity of the body over the base of support in both static and dynamic conditions of movement, shape and orientation.
Video 3 - Badminton
• Coordination Video 3
• During a badminton game players use their coordination skills to maintain a rally. Hand-eye coordination might possibly be the most important. They must use their hands/arms to strike the shuttle where there eyes/brains have seen that it has been hit. They must also move the rest of their bodies to put themselves in the best position to play each shot.
• Coordination – the ability to use 2 or more body parts together
Video 4 - Power
• Power Video 4
• In shot put, you need an amazing amount of strength but you need to be able to use it at speed.
• Power – the ability to undertake strength performances quickly (power = speed x strength)
Video 5 – Goalkeeper Save
• Reaction Time Video 5
• Penalties in handball are taken from close range. The goalkeeper has very little time to see where the ball is going. Then he must move his body in time to stop it. His brain controls all of this movement.
• Reaction Time – the time between the presentation of a stimulus and the onset of movement
Video 6 – 100m Sprint
• Speed Video 6
• A sprinter needs to be able to move their arms and legs in order to cover a distance in the shortest time possible.
• Speed – the differential rate at which an individual is able to perform a movement or cover a distance in a period of time.
Do you remember last week?
• that aspects of Health Related Exercise are usually required in combination but not necessarily all at once or all in equal amounts.
• Exactly the same can be said about Skill
Related Fitness
• Can you think of a sport in which you don’t need one of the components?
Next Task
• All the following slides give a sentence about a sport. You must fill in the blanks.
• Write the missing word on your whiteboard and hold it up as quickly as possible
• A high jumper needs …………….. At take off to achieve the height to clear the bar
• Racket players need ……………… to move the hand holding the racket to the right place to strike the ball correctly.
• Footballers need …………….. To beat their opponents to the ball.
• A gymnast needs …………… to maintain her position on a beam.
• Can you think of some examples of your own?
• Don’t just say what they need…..
• Say WHY ?
• Pick one of the sports people from last week that you described in terms of Health related components of Exercise.
• This time, explain their need for each of the 6 components of skill related fitness.
• Know the 6 aspects of Skill
Related Fitness
• Understand how they relate to physical activity
