THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS Text: I Tim 6:6-19 Intro: To be happy is a choice. Some people aren’t happy because they don’t have the right pursuit. Aim: For us to be happy with what we have, enjoy God’s blessing to us and be rich in in His eyes/time to come. I. Contentment-first factor that makes you happy-v 6-8 A. Godliness with contentment is great gain-v 6 B. Reasons why we need to be content: 1. We brought nothing in this world 2. We can carry nothing out-v 7 C. When should we be contented? 1. When we have food and clothing-v 8 II. Greed-major factor that makes a man unhappy-v 9-10 A. Those who desire to be rich fall into: 1. Temptation 2. Snare 3. Many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition B. The love of money is the root of all evil C. Greediness cause people to stray from their faith D. Greediness will pierced you through with many sorrows. 1. No matter how much you have if you don’t learn to be content, you’re still unhappy. 2. Being greedy will just make you unhappy if you don’t get what you want. 3. The truth is you will never get what you want because you keep wanting for more. E. The man of God should flee from these things-v 11 III. The pursuit that makes you happy-v 11 A. B. C. D. E. F. Pursue righteousness Pursue godliness Pursue faith Pursue love Pursue patience Pursue gentleness -“Your pursuit determines your happiness.” IV. The challenge of your pursuit-v 12 A. The pursuit of happiness could never be without a challenge. B. You have to fight the good fight of faith. 1. Satan comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy -John 10:10 2. Faith is one factor that makes you happy. C. Lay hold on eternal life D. Lay hold on your calling. “Real happiness and satisfaction could not be achieved with the wealth but by answering to your calling.” V. Keeping His commandment-major factor of making us happy-v 13-14 A. We are urged to keep his commandment without spot B. Blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ appearing C. To fear God and keep His commandments is the whole duty of man-Eccl 12:13 1. You could never be happy without fulfilling your duty. VI. Being rich makes you happy-v 17 A. God gives us richly all things to enjoy. 1. He doesn’t give sparingly or stingily -He gives richly and liberally-James 1:5 2. He didn’t give you a part or some but “all things.” 3. The only reason why He gives us all things is for us to enjoy them- “to be happy”. 4. “ In other words we are rich.” B. We should not be haughty C. We should not trust on uncertain riches D. Trust in the living God VII. The real rich people-v 18-19 A. B. C. D. E. Those who do good Rich in good works Those who are ready to give Those who are willing to share Those who lay treasures in heaven or for the time to come-Matt 6:19-21 F. Conclusion: I Tim 6:17 “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.”
