MISSION
HUNTERNET MINING & ENERGY MISSION TO VIETNAM 2016
Austrade and Hunternet would like to invite you to participate in the
Hunternet Mining & Energy Mission to Vietnam 2016
ABOUT THIS MISSION
In collaboration with:
Through Austrade’s Asian Business Engagement Program, Hunternet is
leading a mining and energy trade mission to Vietnam.
Vietnam has been one of the fastest growing economies in South East Asia
and has its sights set on becoming a developed nation by 2020.
Commentators predict continued stable growth of around 6 per cent per
annum for the next 3-4 years. This growth forecast, coupled with the
significant investment planned to realise Vietnam’s Power Master Plan
provides Australian firms with a range of opportunities.
This unique mission builds on Austrade and Hunternet’s engagement with the
senior Vietnamese mining and energy government delegation that visited
NSW in November. Following on from the success of this visit to Australia,
Austrade and Hunternet are providing the opportunity for Australian industry,
through this mission, to connect with the Vietnamese mining and energy
industry and promote Australia’s capabilities to this high growth energy
market.

Vietnam's future economic growth will depend on securing its energy supply
through the development of the coal fired power sector. Vietnam’s Power
Master Plan to 2030 outlines a requirement for approximately 67.3 million
tons of coal in 2020, increasing to 171 million tons in 2030 to feed into its
coal-fired thermal plants. Vietnam is unable to meet this demand based on its
domestic supply. It forecasts to import some 12mil tons in 2020, 48 million
tons in 2025, and 80 mil tons by 2030. By 2030, 45 out of the total 60
operational coal-fired power plants in Vietnam will rely exclusively on
imported coal for power generation.
Along with the coal demand, Vietnam requires infrastructure and services to
support the thermal power sector including establishing a transhipment port,
receiving terminals, logistics and coal blending capability.
Who should attend?
Australian businesses in:
 Mining, mining equipment,
technology and services
 Coal supply, coal supply

 Infrastructure and logistics

MARKET INSIGHTS

Vietnam’s rising energy demand is placing significant pressures on the sustainable and safe development of
the energy sector. Vietnam’s National Power Master Plan VII outlines that the country will need 75,000MW of
installed capacity by 2020 and a total investment of around USD79.9bn between now and 2025 (approx.
USD52bn towards power generation and the rest in electricity transmission and distribution network). To feed
the thermal plants (60 new coal-fired thermal plants are to be built by 2030) as well as the cement, paper and
fertilizer industry production, an estimated 48 million tons of imported coal will be required in 2020 and 80
million in 2030 – creating an immediate need for port infrastructure to meet coal import plans for 2016-17
(source: Vinacomin).

Coal is set to be the primary source of domestic power generation. The Government is also focused on
diversifying its future energy supply mix. Vietnam’s State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Vietnam Electricity
Group, Vinacomin and PetroVietnam presently dominate the market, however, international participation has
been encouraged and is on the rise, including Japan, Korea, Malaysia, both through ODA and private sector.
The Vietnamese Government is also looking to boost energy interconnectivity with other ASEAN countries,
particularly neighbouring Lao PDR.

Vietnam’s new Mining Law requires mining companies to include downstream processing and higher value
production in the mining licence application, whilst providing a more transparent business and operational
environment.

Vietnam has significant untapped reserves of coal in the North East basin (approximately 8.8 billion tonnes)
and brown coal in the Northern Delta region (approximately 39 billion tonnes). With world-class reserves of
bauxite in the Central Highlands (approximately 5.5 billion tonnes), titanium (approximately 500 million
tonnes), iron ore (approximately 1 billion tonnes), chromite (approximately 20 million tonnes), and various
other minerals such as copper, gold, phosphate rocks, rare earths, limestone and tungsten, Vietnam presents
opportunities for processing equipment, technologies and services.

A number of major mining operations have been successfully commissioned recently, such as Asian Mineral
Resources’ Ban Phuc Nickel Mine and processing plant, Masan Resources’s Nui Phao Mine and processing
plant, Vinacomin’s Tan Rai bauxite and alumina plant, in addition to existing operations which are: Besra’s Bong
Mieu and Phuoc Son Gold mines and Sin Quyen Copper mine and plant. A range of new mineral projects are
either at preparation stage or under construction including Sin Quyen 2 copper plant, Ta Phoi copper mine and
plant project, Co Dinh Chromite project, Thach Khe Iron Ore mine project, Nhan Co bauxite and alumina. There
have been a number of smelter evaluation projects for existing mines like Ban Phuc, Nui Phao, Ta Phoi, Sin
Quyen. A significant aluminium project owned by Tran Hong Quan Aluminium Metallurgical Company Limited
commenced in the Highlands of Vietnam in 2014.

Vinacomin - Vietnam’s National Coal and Minerals Industries Group which dominates the coal industry in
Vietnam, has been preparing for a number of major underground coal mine projects. To meet local power
demand, Vinacomin is seeking to improve its capacity and efficiency and to develop new underground mines
during the period of 2015-2025.
