Creating a Database using Formic
Formic is broken down into five modules:
1. Design
-
This program is used to: design every aspect of your forms; edit them if
necessary; and to publish the final result to paper or upload to a website.
-
The program provides facilities for placing a range of different question types on
the forms and for adding and formatting the accompanying text. You can select
various outlines to boxes and other items to achieve the overall appearance you
require. You can also add graphics such as logos and diagrams.
-
A unique database is automatically created when the form design is completely
ready for distribution and data collection.
2. Capture & Process
-
Data from forms is captured via a scanner which reads the documents, stores the
information in a database and creates images of the data which require further
processing.
-
Facilities are made to assist Formic to identify the form objects and data,
including machine and handwritten data and marks in boxes.
-
Any data that cannot be confidently recognised can be presented for immediate
manual review or stored for review at a later date.
3. Dataview
-
This program provides facilities for viewing all the results data, of selected
questions and records. Chosen results can be exported to other programs.
Typically: spreadsheets; database applications; and statistical applications where
the results can be analysed.
4. Management Console
-
This is accessed by the System Administrator (Project Design & Data Quality
Officer).
-
It offers a range of provisions including, for example, the ability to set system
security permissions:
 Allowing users to belong to one or more groups and each group has
permissions assigned to it that control the available functionality. A user
wanting certain functionality must belong to the appropriate group.
 The System Administrator can view database statistics, create and
manage database instances, backup and restore projects.
5. Web Forms

-
This is a module which enables a system where a form may be printed,
completed and scanned OR completed online; with the results collected to the
same database.
-
Furthermore, the rules set at the design stage of the form are applied to each
inbound method ensuring consistency and accuracy of data.
Please Note:
For an in-depth user guide that incorporates all of the above modules, on ‘how to create a
database’, please see the Formic User Guide folder.
If at any point you are unable to do a particular procedure, you can contact Formic either via:
email support@formic.co.uk OR telephone 0870 197 5610.
This is all part of our Annual Management Plan, a copy of which is held in the folder ******.
