Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Symbols
WHMIS was invented in the late 1980’s to prevent
workplace injuries and accidents.
There are some basic rules that need to be followed
when working in the lab. You should always be paying
attention to your surroundings, but before you get
started you must
Clean spills from the outside IN. Apply paper towels over the spill then wipe from

chemicals or gases, use the waft method. (Slowly waft the smell towards your nose not
sniff directly)


When heating a substance in a test tube, be careful not to point the mouth of the test
tube at another person or yourself.
