Volcanoes
Vocabulary
Volcano
– Openings in Earth’s crust where
pressure builds up and molten rock,
rock fragments & hot gasses erupt
o Three Kinds:
o Shield
o Cinder Cone
o Composite
Shield Volcano
– Shaped like a broad, flat dome that
is built by many eruptions

Cinder Cone Volcano
– A steep, cone-shaped volcano
formed by the eruption of cinders
and other rock fragments

the bottom

Magma
– Molten / liquid rock underneath
the crust
o The “recipe” of the magma will
determine how a volcano erupts
Eruption
– When heat and pressure build up
and molten rock, rock fragments &
hot gasses are “released” at a
volcano
Lava
– Molten / liquid rock (magma) that
has reached Earth’s surface after an
eruption
Caldera
– A crater at the top of a volcano that
has either collapsed from below or
been blown off by an eruption and is
sometimes filled with water

– An imaginary “ring” surrounding
the Pacific Plate, containing many
subduction zones, where 80% of
Earth’s active volcanoes are found
