Energy Efficiency
12-L Tax Incentive
Regulation in terms of Section 12L of the Income Tax Act, 1962, on
the allowance for energy efficiency savings
Tax incentive: 45c per verified kWh, (or equivalent kWh).
Illegibility: All energy carriers qualify – not just electricity
Target: large energy consumers e.g. Mining and Manufacturing
Objective: The allowance is aimed at motivating large energy
consumers to reduce on high energy consumption by adopting EE
technologies. The accelerated reduction of high consumption from
fossil fuel based energy will contribute to the reduction of carbon
emission.
BIG EE
International EE knowledge platform
Focus: Appliances, Buildings and Policies
– BAT and non-BAT, Actor Constellation, Good Practice Buildings, Climatic
Zone maps
Target Market: Policy Maker and Investors
Objective: Effectively disperse the EE knowledge and information
to relevant stakeholders. The accelerated adoption of EE
technologies will contribute to the reduction of high energy
consumption and thus reduce the high emissions impacts of
carbon from fossil fuel based electricity.
Energy Efficiency Cool Surfaces Project
Definition: Energy passive materials used in building envelope to improve thermal comfort for
inhabitants. Cool Surfaces reflect heat and light.
Benefits
Lowers roof and building temperatures (8 -12oC) and less heat transfer
Less energy consumption and pollution. (power plants & domestic burn)
Global warming mitigation: Whitening 100m2 of roofing cancels warming effect of 10 tonnes of
CO2 emissions.
Green Transport & Climate Change
Energy Efficiency in Transport
– Promoting the use of EVs (3-5 times less MJ/100km)
– Promoting the use of Public transport and NMT
Reducing Emissions
– Promoting the use of BioGas for Public Transport
– Expanding NMT to include EcoMobility (LEVs)
– Promoting the use of PV to recharge EV batteries
– Promoting solar powered electric game viewers
