DIGITAL COLLECTION OF NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS FOR INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY OF BHARATHIDASAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY USING DSPACE BY P.POTHUMPONNU Supervisor Dr. N. AMSAVENI INTRODUCTION Digital material are stored, processed and transferred via digital devices and networks. Digital services are delivered to users from library by using software tools. The library has different vision in the minds of people from different domains. There are a great number of definitions of digital library as time being and many of them are formulated during the implementation of digital library project. Some of the definitions are comprehensive while some of them focus on one or more aspects of the digital library service. A digital library is a library consisting of digital materials and digital services. What is Institutional Repository? IR consists of formally organized and managed collection of digital content generated by faculty staff and students at an institution the content of these repositories can be available for integration with on campus library and course management system and can also be made available to colleagues and students at other institutions ,as well to the general public. When we use the “term repositories” today we can be speaking about one of many different technologies that support the storage and distribution of digital content including: 1. collection based digital repositories managed by library professionals either stand alone or aggregated. 2. course management systems and associated file stores. 3. Institutional file storage systems 4. Digital asset management workflow system. or 5. web content management systems used by institutions or departments to store and stage web content DSPACE DSpace is a OSS for creating digital library. DSpace (http://www.dspace.org) was developed jointly by the MIT library and Hewlett-Packard (HP) Labs.. It captures, stores, indexes, preserves and redistributes an organizations research material formats. DSpace supports institutional repositories and electronic records management. DSpace is being popularly used worldwide to meet many digital archiving needs. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Information access through electronic media has had a lot of impact on the Libraries and library community. Almost all the librarians have been facilitated to develop new strategy for managing the IT facilities. Newspaper clippings service is the most important to any academic library. Based on these thrusts the Bharathidasan University Library is providing this service to user community by the traditional way. The researcher has observed the entire process and planned to implement the newer technology to bring solution to this service. Hence the researcher has selected the problems as “Developing Digital collection of Newspaper clipping for Institutional Repository of Bharathidasan University” OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY Developing Digital Collection of Newspapers’ for Institutional Repository of Bharathidasan University. To identify the daily news about Bharathidasan University in Printed Papers Vs E-Papers. To provide wide access to the Library’s Online Newspapers collections. To Preserve Digital Intellectual Content for Present and Future use. To avoid Reversing Damage. To scan and convert the entire printed News Clippings in to the digital format Using Digital HP Scanner. To preserve the News clippings related to Bharathidasan University and affiliated Colleges News. To save the valuable shelf space. To create awareness among the Library Professionals about Online News Clippings in Bharathidasan University Library METHODOLOGY Choosing Repository Software There are three types of options available: (a) Open Source Software (b) Commercial Software and (c ) Software Service Model Open Source Software: The software is free to download, but usually requires some level of expertise to implement and maintain. A central governing body manages the source code, but it is open for changes the development community (for example, CDSware, DSpace, E-Prints, Fedora, Greenstone Contd…. Commercial Software Pay for the software and, optionally, any additional subscription or consulting fees. You own the use of the software and, with a subscription, get software upgrades. With a programming interface, or API, you can customise the software, but the software vendor owns, creates, and maintains the source code. Software Service Model A software vendor owns and distributes a software platform, or also hosts and manages your data for you. In this model, the software vendor provides additional services for a fee, and also controls and updates the software source code (examples are EPrints Services, Open Repository or bepress). Implementers will want to choose the software that best matches their needs and available resources (budget and staffing). For example, institutions without significant technical expertise may want to look at some of the commercial services available. In terms of open source software platforms, each has its own unique strengths. OSS Dspace for IR The researcher has selected the suitable institutional repository software Dspace (OSS) and installed Live CD in Linux Platform and also customized the Community, Sub Community and Collection. Requirements For Dspace Java SDK 1.4.2; Apache 2.0.54; Tomcat 5.0.28; Apache Ant 1.6.5; PostgreSQL 8.0.2 and DSpace 1.4 alpha 1 Scope and Limitation The researcher has covered only the library-subscribed newspaper for the year of 2011and 2012. viz., The Hindu Indian Express Dinathanthi Dinakaran Dinamalar Dinamani and Business line Collection at BDU Institutional Repository BDU Library IR provides the access to Scholarly publications, VC Speeches, Question Bank and other resources. Audio Collection [57] CD and DVD Collection [72] Conference Publications [499] Department Profile [6] E-Books [32] BDU Newsletter/Information Bulletin [6] Electronic Theses and Dissertations [9] Journal Articles/Scholarly Publications [275] Lecture Presentation [7] News Clippings [612] Photos [145] Project Reports [28] Question Bank [1260] Syllabus [3] BDU and BDU Library Website Newspapers Clippings Demo for accessing IR http://172.16.110.39/jspui/password-login Search Result Search contd… Full text of Scanned Clippings of VC News FINDINGS Dspace (OSS) is a powerful software for building a repository by its features of Metadata representation, searchable and retrievable by the Web Librarians can provide services more effectively. The usefulness of IT in a library depends on how quickly and easily users get the information. IR helps in achieving this purpose and information can be acquired, processed, and distributed quickly, economically and efficiently. BDU Library has implemented the Web-based, full-text news clipping to our library users over its Intranet. The Repository is running well, being appreciated and used extensively by Library patrons of BDU. CONCLUSION Newspaper Clippings helps in providing the latest news and archives to users posted at remote comers of the affiliated colleges users, making them feel connected to the rest of the Universities by reading the news about BDU. This service will be role model and useful in the design and implementation of web based news clipping service in other University Libraries As most libraries provides newspaper clipping service to its user community, we suggest a web-based digital newspaper clippings service.
