UNITED WAY OF TUCSON AND SOUTHERN ARIZONA Position Description Senior Director of Community Development Full Time, FLSA Exempt Job Summary: This position directs and manages various aspects of United Way’s Community Development activities including all aspects of United Way’s Income Strategies section, the Volunteer Center at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, Community Impact data collection and contract management, and Geographic Information Systems. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Community Development, the director oversees and directs all of the strategies and partnerships associated with Financial Stability and Income Strategies, including, but not limited to: the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program; financial assistance and public benefits outreach; and financial education efforts. In addition, this position oversees strategies and partnerships associated with the Volunteer Center at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, including, but not limited to: regional volunteer recruitment, volunteer management training, and the development and growth of volunteer and donor affinity group programs. This is a full time position for a motivated individual with a high level of initiative, excellent management, communication, organizational and facilitation skills. The position directs the work of program managers, support staff, and several student interns and volunteers. Responsibilities: Planning and Community Development Oversees and facilitates the development of the strategic plans, objectives and outcomes for the Financial Stability Partnership and the Volunteer Center at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, and affiliated work groups. Oversees the development of research and analysis of best practice, evaluation, and statistical information. Works with the community at-large, non-profits organizations, faith-based community and for-profit corporations to leverage respective resources and collaborate on community initiatives. Collaborates with public policy committee and community partners to advocate for our community as aligned with the mission of United Way. Provides technical assistance and implement strategies with community partners based on best-practices, to enhance program and population outcomes. Coordinates Community Impact dashboard and evaluation. United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona 2012 Sr. Director, Community Development Public Education/Social Marketing Oversees public education and marketing activities for financial stability programs and the Volunteer Center. Presents at local, state and national conferences and workshops. Oversees the development and dissemination of informational and promotional materials related to programs. Promotes United Way within the community and acts as an ambassador for the goals of United Way Resource Development Secures additional resources by researching grant and other funding opportunities and writing and directing the development of collaborative grant proposals. Collaborates with the Resource Development Division and other Community Development directors to secure business and foundation resources. Oversees efforts to secure resources and carry out special events and projects (e.g., Days of Caring, Community Impact events, etc.). Develops positive working relationships with government and philanthropic organizations. Performance Evaluation Establishes requirements for contracted services and oversees reporting on overall performance objectives and outcomes. Establishes evaluation and accountability mechanisms for United Way contracted services. Directs and manages the work of Financial Stability Program and Volunteer Center staff and independent contractors to ensure consistency with objectives and outcomes. Collaborates with United Way finance staff to assure that all program and financial procedures and payments are accountable to financial requirements and regulations. Administers United Way’s Geographic Information System software to monitor community change and target strategies toward at-risk and underserved areas. Facilitation/Coordination Develops and maintains relationships with government and private philanthropic organizations and serves on local, state and national planning and advocacy task forces and committees. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with a wide range of individuals in business, non-profit, private, and governmental organizations. Directs and facilitates the work of independent contractors and other project participants to develop plans and projects. Collaborates with other directors and managers at United Way to develop strategies and partnerships that results in having a major impact on the community. Management and Administration Directs all funded activities, prioritizes responsibilities and assignments, and ensures completion of timely reports and work products. Develops, directs, and monitors the overall budget in areas of responsibility. Plans, designs and negotiates the scope of work with community partners and oversees contract and project monitoring. Hires, directs and supervises the work of staff responsible for Income results and outcomes. Creates and edits a variety of written documents, correspondence, speeches, and reports. Ensures that all staff and consultants perform duties in accordance with United Way policies and procedures. Performs duties in accordance with UWTSA policies and procedures such as attending staff meetings, completing accurate and timely timesheets and expense reports, and rotating building lockup duties. Other Duties as Assigned Qualifications, Skills and Abilities: At least a Bachelor’s degree in family studies, human services, public administration, or a related field; Masters degree preferred. Five years experience in a leadership/management position in community development, human services or other related field. Equivalent combination of work experience and/or education may substitute for advanced degree. Demonstrated excellent written/verbal communication skills, including clear, concise, and accurate written documents, grammar, spelling, and selection/organization of appropriate presentation method/vehicle. Demonstrated customer service, problem solving, time management, and organizational skills. Well-developed computer skills, including familiarity with Geographic Information Systems. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of United Way staff as well as diverse volunteers, donors, community partners, vendors, and independent contractors. Demonstrated success directing and managing multiple projects and budgets. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and volunteers. Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle stressful situations, negotiate and resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and to respect and observe organizational protocol. Ability to travel to work in a variety of locations throughout the metropolitan Tucson area and other parts of the State when required.
