The Miller memo April 17th, 2014 What have we been up to this2014142014 week? In Math, we finished up our first unit on squares and rectangles. Now, we are starting to study how to find the area and perimeter of both of the two shapes. In Reading this week, we finished up our autobiographical sports cards. Now, we are focusing on figurative language. This week, we learned the difference between a simile and metaphor. Next week, we will focus on other types of figurative language. In Language Arts, the students made their own poetry packets with all of the poems they created over the past few weeks. They had a chance to share some of their favorites with the class. We reviewed the types of poems by attempting to create group poems of different kinds. Next week, we will learn some of the strategies needed to effectively research a topic. In Science, we used electromagnets to create a type of telegraph. We also learned about Morse code and how it was used. The students created messages for each other to decode. Next week, we will review all of the magnetism and electricity concepts. There will be a test sometime during the week of the 5th. In Social Studies this week, we started to study the Southeast Region. First, we labeled a map of the states and a few major water bodies. Then, we started on a virtual boat tour of some of the region’s locations. There will be a Southeast Region Map quiz on Tuesday next week. Thanks to all that attended Open House. The students created some really neat things this year and I know they were happy to show it off. Have a great weekend! Pictures of the Week (Left) Students used electromagnets to create telegraphs.
