The Scorecard CLUB CHAMPION 2014 A picture is worth a thousand words! Year-end is in the books and we have crowned a new Club Champion. It was a great tournament which came down to the last day to decide many of our award winners. Steve Grosky was able to hang on and after 8 tournaments (best 6 + year-end) won the coveted Club Championship Trophy by 1 stroke over Gary Graham. Gary posted the best 2 rounds at Temecula Creek Inn picking up 9 strokes to finish a very close 2nd in Low Net. The great round was enough to catch Steve Roush and win the Low Gross title by 1 stroke. However Mr. Roush was able to hang on and win the Special Events title. Steve Grosky also held off a late push by Tom Evans, Albert Santos and Andy Sahli to win the Putting title also by 1 stroke. Grosky continued his run on the hardware winning the President Flight Singles match over Tom Evans. Ray Johnson was able to close out Anthony McGlade to win the Vice President Singles. The 2014 Doubles Champions are Jay Supple and Dave Deen. They took it to Tom Evans and Rick Gibbons to secure the Doubles title. Finally one of the biggest surprises was our new Gorilla Champion. Jim Lunn won the Long Drive title and paid out at 25 to 1. Congratulations to all our 2014 titleholders! YEAR-END 2014 This year’s event seemed to be a big hit to the members and their wives. At the awards dinner I forgot to pass along a big THANK-YOU to Andrea Tumbleson who arranged the wine tour for the wives. From what I understand a great time was had by all. I also want to pass along a thank-you to both Andrea and Lynn Melton who took the time to take many of the pictures posted in the gallery. One of the toughest decisions that we make each month is to select the tees for each tournament. We want to be fair but also make each course a challenge that rewards the best golfer. Temecula Creek Inn was no different. We always want our club championship to be a true test of our ability. It is our US Open. It is almost automatic that we go with blue tees for year-end. This year we were concerned that this might be to tough a test. With the course playing long and a significant breeze on most of the holes, low scores were not expected, especially in the VP flight (who have a tendency to whine at times about blue tees). That was definitely not the case! The VP flight had some fantastic rounds. Day 1 we had 3 net rounds in the 60’s. Tony Perez shot a 68, Bruce Robertson had a great 64 and Chris Sinner had the round of the tournament shooting an 84 net 62. The 2nd day it was the Pres. Flight that seemed to figure the course out. There were 3 rounds in the 60’s. Graham, Deen and Burke shot 67, 68 & 69 respectively. Once again the round of the day was in the VP Flight. Joe Ellis was able to play thru his hangover and shoot an unbelievable net 64. Chris, Bruce, Joe, Gary, Tony & Dave, don’t be surprised if you receive a visit from the handicap fairy. Remember no good round goes unpunished. Chris Sinner won the tournament in the VP flight with a very nice two day total of 137. He was followed by Bruce Robertson at 143 and Tony Perez at 144. Tony also won low putts with 59 for his 2 day total. Chris posted 181 to win Low Gross for the 36 hole tournament. Hitting 9 greens in regulation to win most greens in the VP Flight. I know that it was announced that Jim Lunn won most greens at the dinner but an error was made in reading the spreadsheet. So I will take the $10 out of my hefty president’s salary and have it waiting for Chris at San Clemente. Jim Lunn apparently was just getting warmed up for the Gorilla contest by winning the long drive on Saturday. His doubles partner Joe Ellis stepped up and won the event on Sunday. In the Presidents Flight it was the Gary Graham show. Most people thought Gary was too old to win a 36 hole tournament. Or was it we were just getting old waiting for him to hit the ball. Either way we underestimated his desire to get his way paid to state. Gary posted a 157 gross for both days, 11 shots better than 2nd place. His net score was 139 which was 4 shots better than the 142 that Jim Burke posted for second and 7 shots better than the 146 Dave Deen posted for 3rd. Gary also hit most greens with 17. Tom Evans demonstrated his power by winning the Long Drive on Saturday and Jay Supple kept it in the foursome by winning the long drive on Sunday. Steve Roush who dominated the Silverback long drive this year ended the year with another long drive special event point by winning the Silverback long drive on Saturday. Jim Burke stepped up and won it on Sunday. It was truly a great weekend for Gary Graham. He walked away with $400 for 1st place in the Pick Your Partner. Gary’s partner Bruce Robertson was a gentleman and picked his partner which netted him $300 for 2nd place in the Pick Your Partner. Lastly one of the good guys in the club, Dave Blair, won the only skin in the VP Flight on Saturday winning $160. Congratulations to the scramble team of Supple, Johnson, Adkins & Guich who finished 8 under to beat the very strong team of Sahli, Cloud, Melton J & Grosky K who finished 7 under. It sounds like Temecula Creek Inn was well received by the club. We almost had enough alcohol to make it thru 2 days of the 3-day tournament. We will increase our alcohol budget for next year. Money changed hands as the result of multiple bets both on the course and at the poker table Friday and Sunday night. It was also nice seeing so many of the wives attend this year. I enjoyed meeting many who had not attended before. I hope they will make it back next year. Just to keep everybody in the loop we have started negotiations to come back next year to Temecula Creek Inn. I will keep you posted on our progress. It was also brought to my attention that some underage girls were hosted in our hospitality suite. This is completely unacceptable behavior. I am putting whoever hosted them on warning that another such infraction could result in a lifetime ban from ORCO TELCO. OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW I want to welcome Efrain Alvarado to the 2014 – 2015 board. Efrain will pick up the responsibility of treasurer for the club. We are lucky to have Efrain on the board and I know he will do a great job. I also want to thank Tom Evans and Gary Graham for all their hard work and commitment to the club. I know I gave these guys a lot of crap at the dinner (because it is what I do) but these guys put in a lot of time and effort to their jobs on the board and to the club. I appreciate all their efforts and want them to know they will be missed. I will take over the responsibility of writing the newsletter each month. I just want to apologize in advance to any of you whose feelings I may hurt over the next 12 months. I think I am a pretty funny guy. My wife reminds me all the time that I am not that funny. So I hope more of you feel the same way I do and not the way my wife does. I hope that each of you will have a great year and look forward to each tournament in ORCO TELCO. BEGINNING OF THE NEW YEAR Time to start the new golfing year! The good news is that we are all tied for 1st place in the race for the club championship. Just remember that you can’t win the club championship or get your way paid to the state tournament without participating in the year-end tournament. The beginning of our year also means it is time to pay dues. We need to collect $125 from each of you ASAP. Please be prepared to pay your dues at the next tournament San Clemente. If you are not going to be attending the next tournament please put a check in the mail for the $125 made out to ORCO TELCO and mail to my home address; Andy Sahli, 10565 Cedarhill Cir, Villa Park, 92861 STATE TOURNAMENT The state tournament will be played again this year at Avila Beach and Cypress Ridge, just outside of Pismo Beach, on September 27th and 28th. We always send a large contingent to the tournament and I don’t expect anything different this year. The cost to play in the 2 day tournament is $165. We are looking for a commitment to attend at our July tournament with the full amount to be paid no later than our August tournament. If you have any questions about the state tournament, I will be happy to answer them at check-in for San Clemente. MEMBERSHIP I would like to post the current membership list to the website. Before I do this I want to make sure that each of you are okay with having your email and telephone number posted to the site. This would be used so that members can contact each other in the event of a make-up match or other need. I would also ask that if any of you hit “reply all” to respond to a group email from the board, that you are sensitive to the fact that several of our members use their business email to be contacted. I don’t want to be inundating anybody’s work email with ORCO TELCO business or ORCO TELCO fun! This includes board members who may have just self-medicated and want to share the 4000 things he learned at the last tournament. I am also going to try something new this year in the newsletter. I am going to have a section on the rules of golf. I think it is a good reminder on how to apply the rules while we are out on the course. Roush and Grosky have agreed to help me post a rule a month. Here is Grosky’s interpretation on a Water Hazard. RULES OF GOLF There are two types of water hazards as defined by the Rules of Golf. A "Water Hazard" is identified by yellow stakes and defined by a painted yellow line on the ground or the yellow stakes at ground level when no painted line is present. There is also the "Lateral Water Hazard", which is identified by red stakes and by a painted red line on the ground, or the red stakes at ground level when no painted line is present. This is a traditional water hazard, but with some additional options for relief. Below are your options for both situations. Water Hazard: These generally exist as small creeks running perpendicular to the play of the hole, or are smaller lakes with all sides easily accessible. Your main option here is Rule: 26-1b, it allows us to drop a ball on the line created between the flagstick, and where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard with a one-shot penalty. You also have two other options for proceeding: 1) Play the ball as it lies in the hazard, 2) Play the ball from your previous spot. Lateral Water Hazard: These tend to run parallel to the play of the hole and are not shaped in a way that a player can fairly get a ball back in play under Rule: 26-1b. With the lateral, there are two new options for relief. First, you may use the spot where the ball last crossed the margin, measure two club-lengths not nearer the hole and drop your ball within that radius (Rule 26-1). Or, find a spot on the opposite side of the margin that is equidistant from the hole and use the two club-lengths from that spot as described above again with a one-shot penalty. Weigh your options carefully; see if there may be a drop zone that is a better option. Get your ball back in play from the best location within the rules. If you are not sure remember to ask your playing competitors. ORCO TELCO Version Water hazards are a bummer, just drop it anywhere you think it went in the water. Try to remember to add one stroke. Losing the ball should be penalty enough but it is not. JULY TOURNAMENT Our next tournament is Saturday, July 26th at San Clemente Golf Course. Our first starting time is 11:00 AM and the cost will be $90 (including $10 side pot). Please be at the course and checked in at least 45 minutes before your assigned starting time. Since the starting sheet changes multiple times between now and the tournament. Please make sure you check the starting sheet one last time the Friday night before the tournament. PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE NEW YEAR We have decided to cancel the Silverback long drive special event. So in order to win a long drive and qualify for the Gorilla Contest you will need to win the long drive in your assigned flight (Pres or VP). We have also decided to bring back Partners Best Ball. You will sign up for Doubles Best Ball at the next tournament. You do not need to sign up with the same partner that you play your doubles matches with. Each month starting in August you will turn in a card for your Best Ball Team. It will be the best net score on each hole based on the handicap assigned to that hole and your assigned handicap (don’t worry we will be there to help you after the August Tournament). We will eliminate the 1 or 2 highest net scores each month until we get down to 5 or 6 teams going into year-end. We will be recognizing the winning Partners Best Ball Team at the year-end awards dinner. This was a part of the club for many years and the board feels it is a great time to bring it back. CHRISTMAS PARTY Steve Grosky is planning an ORCO TELCO Christmas Party for Saturday, December 20th at Angelo & Vinci’s in Fullerton. Please be on the lookout for an email from Steve looking for a show of interest. After meeting many of your better half’s we now feel safe moving forward with the party.
