What is Real Now? Artificial Intelligence By Geena Yarbrough What is Artificial Intelligence? Is it a mechanical system Could it be a operating inside the many computerized chip things around us? forming the thoughts in our minds? Definition Artificial Intelligence is a division of computer science and engineering that deals with intelligent behavior, learning, and adaptation in machines. History of AI Research of AI started during the 1940s. In 1956, the father of AI, John McCarthy held a conference on Artificial Intelligence and AI has been referred as AI since then. As time progressed AI became more complex allowing detailed and complex tasks to be possible by machines. We now see many different operations handled by machines due to the hard research and study put in many years ago. Where is AI used? • Banks use AI systems to organize operations, invest in stocks, and manage properties. • Medical clinics use AI systems to organize schedules, make staff rotations, and to provide medical information. • Financial institutions use systems to detect charges or claims that are not normal and flag these for human investigation. • Homeland security uses speech and text recognition, data mining, and e-mail spam filtering. • Robots have also become common in many industries that are considered dangerous to humans. AI in Computers • Smart Internet search engines that read the pages before suggesting them to you. • Diagnostic tools that analyze MRI images to find tumors • Biomedical informatics systems that understand human genomes and search for new drug therapies. • Biometric that recognize your face, voice and fingerprints. AI at Home • Many computerized games and systems use AI. The CPU is an AI such as in HALO. • Introducing the new age of cleaning ROOMBA, the vacuum. • Meet our new member of the family AIBO, the dog. AI in Pictures and Writing • There are countless numbers of films and books which feature AI. • The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein. • The Terminator series. Heard of the News? • George the robot playing hide-and-seek. • AI job market will look over your resume. • Man Beats Machine in SCRABBLE, and wins $10,000. AI Research Today • American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) is an organization dedicating advancement in the understanding of AI in a technical and scientifical way. • Many science groups around the world are creating new ways to make AI more intelligent. • Government operations seeking newer ways to make AI useful.
