AUTOMOTIVE I: Engines 2015-2016
Mr. Hunter Room V-20
Welcome to the shop. Over the course of the next semester you will join me as we go through an entire
engine part by part. So pay attention and work hard now. Someday you’ll know it was worth the effort.
The number one goal is safety in the automotive classes. To help ensure that every student receives quality
instruction in a safe and productive environment, the following syllabus must be read and signed by students
and parents. Please return the bottom of the second page to the teacher by September 6th.
Course Description: Credits .5; Semester
Auto I is recommended for students who like to work with their hands and want to explore automotive
opportunities. Students will learn about the design & operation of engines, and how a car works, and how to
identify & maintain key systems under the hood of a car.
Students will disassemble, inspect, re-assemble, and test run a small engine first and then students will
complete lab work on cars. Students will learn mechanical skills, problem solving, related communication, math
& science concepts, organization, and job skills in a practical environment.
Keys to Success:
Students are expected to develop and employ positive work habits including safety, organization, career
planning, communication, and hard work.
SAFETY FIRST: Learn & follow the safety rules. You will above all else be proficient in shop safety and
housekeeping of your area. Students will wear safety glasses when in the lab or anytime when work is being
performed in the classroom. Students will not use equipment or tools without proper training. Coveralls or other
protective clothes are to be used when required. No shorts or sandals or equivalent.
A JOB WELL DONE: Do your best and take pride in your work. You will develop good work habits; dependability,
promptness, the ability to work in a group or individually, professionalism, and quality work.
KNOW YOUR STUFF: You will be learning the names of engine parts, and how they work and how to check them
using the available information. Then you will learn skills on real cars. This can only happen with a lot of practice.
FIND YOUR FUTURE: You will explore career and education opportunities in vocational occupations.
HOLD YOUR PEACE: Pay attention in class and don’t talk when the teacher is.
ASK AND RECEIVE: Need extra help? Ask for an appointment to make up attendance. Tuesday after school is
reserved for this.
DO YOUR DUTY: Students will be responsible for the proper care of the shop area, tools, vehicles, & engines used
for learning as well as being considerate of others. Students will respect other students, school and student
property, and clean up after themselves.
BE THERE: Be at school. Be where you should be in the shop. The teacher should always know where you are.
Extra-curricular Options:
You are encouraged to participate in our SkillsUSA club to get the most out of your time here.
SkillsUSA can provide great opportunities through school functions, travel to competitions, and working on our
great club projects, such as a 1928 Ford. This club meets once a week. The Homecoming float is the first project.
