I) INTRODUCTION
A. Fundamentals of engine operation and diagnosis including lubrication and cooling
systems. Emphasis on identification of components, measurements, inspections, and repair
methods.
B. Automotive Engine Theory (AUMT 2305) is a required course for the completion of
a two year Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive Mechanic/Technician or a
Level I or Level II certificate of completion in the Automotive Technician Program.
C. This course is occupationally related and serves as a preparation for a career
Automotive Service and Repair field.
D. Prerequisites: This course has a prerequisite or co-requisite of AUMT 1405 or
permission of the Dept. Chair.
II) OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, Automotive Engine Theory, the student will be
able to:
A. Explain engine diagnostic techniques.
B. Identify engine components.
C. Explain engine operation theory.
D. Identify signs of engine component failure.
E. Use service manuals to identify a vehicle and to locate specifications and repair
procedures.
F. Identify and describe the operations of the basic engine systems.
G. Perform basic engine systems troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on
lubrication and cooling systems.
H. Make test to determine engine mechanical conditions and indicate if more
extensive repairs are required.

Properly and safely use and maintain tools and equipment and practice
shop safety.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS/ GRADING
A. Student will be expected to attend all class meetings and participate in classroom
discussions and lab projects.
B. Absences need to be discussed with instructor prior to absence unless it is an
emergency situation
C. Only lab projects pertaining to course specific objectives will be allowed in the shop.
D. 50% of the final grade will be calculated from two written examinations. The midterm will be given during the fourth week of the term and the final will be given in
the eighth week. Examinations will and will be reviewed the week prior to the exam
week.
E. 40% of the final grade will be calculated from the students’ lab performance. 10% of
the grade will be the students’ attendance.
F. Grading is as follows: 100-90% A, 89-80% B, 79-70% C, 69-60% D, 59-0% F
G. Withdrawal=W; Incomplete=I; Non-attendance=F
H. Safety and proper work habits will be stressed at all times in the shop.
I. Appropriate environmental policies and procedures will be followed.
