Lecture, Discussion, Reading, Case Examples and Case Analysis.
This course provides students with an in-depth study of the signs, symptoms and
syndromes relating to the differentiation of disease according to the Shang Han
Lun ( Six- Channel Differentiation ). Discussion of this theory, which was
developed to help understand epidemics, will also cover appropriate herbal and
acupuncture treatment for each syndrome.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to give the history and basic theory of the development of the
Shang Han Lun, Wen Bing, and San Jiao differentiations.
2. Students will be able to describe the progression of disease from the exterior to the
interior of the body, according to the Shang Han Lun Differentiation.
3. Student will be able to describe the impact of Exterior Cold on the body and the way it
can change to Heat, according to the Shang Han Lun Differentiation.
4. Students will be able to list the signs, symptoms, and rationale for these signs and
symptoms for each stage and sub-phase of disease in the Shang Han Lun.
5. Students will be able to give the classical formulae traditionally used during each stage
and sub-phase of illness and describe the rationale behind each formula for the Shang
Han Lun.
6. Students will be able to diagnose case studies and recommend herbal treatments based
upon the Shang Han Lun differentiation.

WEEKLY TOPICS, LEARNING OBJECTIVES, AND ASSIGNMENTS
Week 1
Students will be able to describe the development of Shan Han Lun theory from
historical point of view. It’s original emergence as a means to treat infectious disease
through to some of the more modern day interpretations, both in Asia and the West.

Week 2
Students will be able to describe the signs and symptoms of Taiyang Cold syndrome,
with related herbs. Students will be able to diagnose clinical material using this Shang
Han Lun differentiation of syndromes.

Week 3
Students will be able to describe the signs and symptoms of Taiyang Fu Syndromes,
including Water Accumulating in the Lower Jiao and Blood Accumulating in the Lower
Jiao, with related herbal formulas. Students will be able to diagnose clinical material
using this Shang Han Lun differentiation.
