Welcome to term 2 Inquiry This term we are going to take a close look at “change”. Our key statement is “Lets be Healthy and Make a Change”. We will start with a social science focus of how people make decisions about access to and use of resources and understand how cultural practices vary but reflect similar purposes. We will do this through the study of food and rituals that go with food. We will also look at what children in different places around the world might have in their lunches as well as what children in the past may have had. Be ready for the children to grill you over what you ate for lunch when you were at school. We will also be looking at the children’s lunches, dissecting these looking at what is healthy what is not and ways we can improve what they have. Sports Rotation Our focus this term is small and large ball skills. Our sports rotation of hockey, uni hockey, small ball games, taupawai, netball, soccer, basketball and touch rugby will involve skill teaching as well as games a round these skills. Choir Festival This term some our children will be involved with the Somerville Choir. The children are busily learning all the parts to the different song they will be singing. If your child is in the choir please encourage them to learn the words to all the songs. The festival itself will be on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 June. J-Rock A number of our children are involved in the J-Rock dance group and continue full steam ahead in preparation for our performance in the 2014 J Rock Stage Challenge at the ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre on July the 4th. Tickets ($33 adult and $29 child) for this event are available at the school office. For all those involved, please be aware that there will be notices going home throughout the term to keep everyone informed about what is happening both with the preparation and the event day itself. If any parents would like to lend a hand during the day/evening please email estevens@willowbank.school.nz We are going to shine! Speeches/Debates Speeches are a major part of our year for year 5 and 6 literacy programme. This term we start with students writing and presenting debates, and progress to speech writing. The Year 6 speech finalist will represent Willowbank School at the Howick and Pakuranga primary schools’ APPA speech competition. Our speech finalist will also receive the prestigious Speech trophy and award at the end of year Prize Giving. This year we are encouraging our Mandarin and or Cantonese speakers to represent Willowbank in the Chinese languages APPA speech competition. Uniforms The senior school at Willowbank are the leaders of the school and need to set the standard when it comes to uniforms. Children must walk to and from school daily in correct uniform with plain black footwear. If you are not familiar with the school uniform please ask you classroom teacher. Sports uniform is compulsory for all Year 4, 5 and 6 children and can be purchased from John Russell Menswear clothing store in Howick. As the weather deteriorates over the winter terms our school fields get very muddy. If the children would like to use the fields during these months they will need to have a complete change of clothes and a plastic bag to take home any dirty clothing. This change of clothes must be different to the school PE uniform. Please ensure all items that come to school are named as we have a major collection of unnamed items in our ever-growing lost property. Enjoy the term and we look forward to seeing you at our term 2 school wide events.
