Parachute design for BACAR III
By CJ Kriek – ZR6LJK
Sam Baxter have written two programs essential to parachute design namely rate.exe and gore.exe.
Rate.exe works out the decent rate of the payload with specific diameter parachute.
Once you have the aimed decent rate and the corresponding diameter you can move onto the next
phase to design the parachute of matching diameter.
Using rate.exe we entered 10 pounds for the payload weight and 84 inches for the diameter of the
parachute, this resulted in a decent rate of about 5ms-1.
Next you need to design the parachute. This we do with gore.exe and we enter the diameter info in
from rate.exe.
The gore program will take the diameter info and use that and other useful data to design a pattern
to cut and stitch the parachute together.
First you need to enter the diameter of the parachute, you can guess or use the rate.exe output for
the diameter.
Next you need to enter the number of sections of the parachutes or as this program calls it gores.
My suggestion is to use at least four but more than 8 becomes an issue with the sowing.
Overlap is the length of material overlap between the gores, 1 inch is working great this allows
enough room for dual double stitching next to the rope inlay.
CH or chord is the length of the gore this gets calculated by the program.
Chord
Finally to be able to draw a pattern on paper you would need reference points from a centre line by
entering: 1, you will get references for every 1 inch.
Below is the output from the program
By using MSexcel I converted the inch to millimeter in the tables below.
For a big 5kg payload.
