2012 Select Leadership Development Program Brendan Beyer LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO 2 PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT -Do upon others as you expect for yourself. -Always be prompt and timely -Always be honest to yourself and others. -Keep things in order, and never give up on goals -Any career advancement or development is to benefit family, whether in the short run or long run. -Never become too serious, always keep a sense of humor. -Don’t stereotype myself or others, look beyond the shell. -Continuously strive to impact others in a positive way. LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO 3 LEADERSHIP STYLE I TEND TO LEAD WITH MY STRENGTHS BY: Organized-prioritizing the tasks essential to goals in my life or career. I am very results oriented. I plan out short term goals and long term goals, but also important versus urgent tasks for myself and for groups I’m leading. I frequently remind myself and team members how close achievement is to these goals. Analytical-being very task-focused, I thoroughly rationalize to myself and others why the created tasks need to be accomplished and look long term into what can be gained in a broad outlook by completing the tasks. Dependable-being very dependable, honest, and fair minded in my actions and choices. I act in this way in hopes that it serves as an example and inspires others to be considerate in their course of action. Enabler-showing my team or group my level of dependability, I trust them to complete goals by deadlines and delegate important tasks to members eliminating inefficient micromanaging. I’m able to see people’s strengths and split group members up into responsibilities or roles where they will greatly benefit the team the most. Creativity-always keeping an open-mind whether with people, customs, or future prospects and being imaginative to find new solutions to difficult problems or situations. Ambition-having high amounts of ambition and optimism to help motivate myself and others in reaching their goals. If there is ever free time on my plate I always try to find something productive to be doing before I consider relaxing. A REAS F OR I MPROVEMENT -Being more assertive -To not always put others well-being before my own LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO 4 LEADERS I IDENTIFY WITH MOST JEFF BEYER My father has seemed to always have burdened the weight of responsibility. He always was the most responsible and is the most successful of his brothers. He is currently the national sales manager for American Blue Ribbon Holdings, LLC. He is always volunteering for opportunities to help others and will go to any length to help a friend, or stranger in need. I am very similar to him in this aspect, as I always strive to impact others in a positive way especially if they are in need of positive reinforcement. MICHAEL DELL Michael had always been into business. When he was fifteen years old he had been selling magazine subscriptions in the summer until he made an observation that most magazines were bought by newlyweds or new homeowners. He collected names from mortgage and marriage applications and went out targeting this demographic and made $18,000, which was more than his history teacher’s annual salary. He had gone to college studying pre-med, but he had started up a part-time business repairing computers. It became so successful that it eventually morphed into what we now know as Dell, Inc. In 1992, he became the youngest CEO listed in Fortune’s top 500. Dell had created a business that became a public company by not just dreaming big but performing it with hard work and dedication. JORDAN ADAMS Jordan has been my mentor for Select Leadership Development Program, but was also the President of the business fraternity I am a member of, Delta Sigma Pi. In this organization I have seen effective leadership, not leadership that demands results at the expense of its followers, but leadership that encourages unity and collaboration. He always seeks to understand before acting, and as a leader I tend to be more patient and look at the entire situation before making a decision. I understand that I may not always see things the same way as someone else and before damaging anything with a hasty decision I always carefully consider the situation. RYAN G OINS Ryan was my manager while I worked for Wendys during my school breaks. While he may have not had a glamorous career or job he certainly understood how to be a leader. When things needed to get done, but his team was lacking because they were falling behind and there was no end in sight he would always jump in and help out. Sometimes rather than physically being at the team’s side helping them along, he would offer words of encouragement or keep moments light and funny. Encouraging words go a long way coming from someone well respected. I feel that in many difficult situations that I cannot help in any other way at the very least I will give encouragement and lighten the mood. ALEXANDER THE GREAT Alexander the Great was born into the Macedonian royal family. After rising to the throne he went on to conquer almost the entire known world by the age 32. He was known for his advanced strategy in battle, which is why he was never defeated in battle. In an attempt to help unify his empire Alexander went so far as to marry a Persian woman, Susa. That way there would be mixed royal blood and it was acceptable to mix with the different cultures. To be a great leader it is vital to have a strong group following you that trusts each other as well as the leader. I strongly believe in that leaders need to really know the group they are leading in the very least knowing what the team member’s goals are, and why they are where they are. LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO 5 FORMAL LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES W EBSITE DEVELOPMENT TEAM LEAD (SPRING 2011-PRESENT) Beginning fall quarter of my Junior year I volunteered and was elected the lead for the website development team as a part of the Select Leadership Development Program. In this position I have worked with multiple teams and leads that are within the same organization, but have different goals. I have had so far learned how to effectively aid other’s goals by serving as a service function for their teams, while getting a small amount of help for our team’s plans in return. PLEDGE CLASS PRESIDENT OF DELTA SIGMA P I (FALL 2010) During fall quarter of my sophomore year I was elected as the president of my pledge class for Delta Sigma Pi. I was responsible in this position for overseeing 13 of my fellow pledge brothers with diverse personalities and backgrounds in reaching our ultimate goal—initiation. I organized daily meetings and ensured the executive pledge members were on task with their responsibilities throughout the quarter. From this position I learned greatly how to motivate members who do not want to contribute. I also learned how to include group members who do not feel included and how to integrate them as an important part of the team. SENIOR CLASS TREASURER (2009) I was a senior class officer in high school. This meant I had the responsibility of getting the graduation ceremony ready. I went to several of my classes artists and got them working in a team on designing the programs and the motto for our senior class. I did a lot of micromanaging, and I looked at the possible trips in our price range and gave the choices to the trip planning committee. I would periodically check up on these groups to make sure things went smoothly as graduation approached. Through this position I learned the importance of deadlines and scheduling. I also learned how to successfully plan big events and how much time in advance is necessary to make an idea come to fruitation. W RESTING TEAM CAPTAIN (2009) On my high school wrestling team I was the team captain. In order to make sure we were all on our way to victory as a team, I made sure everyone was giving their best effort in the practice room and at matches. If someone was slacking, I would encourage them to try harder by pushing myself even more— leading through example. I learned from this experience how important optimism and ambition is to make progress towards anything. Sometimes the lead has to be even more ambitious and optimistic than normal in order to help influence others in the right direction. INFORMAL LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES INTERMEDIATE ACCOUNTING GROUP LEAD In my classes in the BAM series we were introduced to doing the majority of our schoolwork in groups. The groups were randomly assigned and I immediately helped introduce our team members to each other and set out our tasks or deadlines for achieving our goals. I introduced using creative and efficient new approaches towards completing assignments such as Google Documents. Through leading these groups I learned how to overcome language barriers and include foreign students as a useful and powerful asset to the team. I also learned how to quickly begin operating effectively with teams in a short span of time after being reassigned rapidly through the course of a few months. There was not enough time to have a traditional, initial relationship building phase. LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO 6 MY DIFFERENTIAL ADVANTAGE Today many processes in organizations are slowed down by the lack of coordination and prioritization. On a personal and professional level, I am very organized and manage my time very well. I schedule both short term and long term goals and prioritize them according to their importance, not according to their false sense of urgency. Because of how I am organized I can accomplish my important tasks faster than someone else at my level. I am also very honest and dependable so it is easier for groups I am leading to trust me and we are able to work together and achieve more than just minimum expectations. By being honest and dependable, my managers are enabled to delegate tasks to me without having to hover over my shoulder, constantly worried, that I am going to fall through on my promises. When I am in a leadership position I try to get to know my team members well and I enable them to be a different part of our team based upon their expertise, but also upon their personality. Many managers look at the hard skills of team members and assign them to tasks, but very few take the time to get to know the goals and aspirations of each team member and find what motivates them. It has given me more confidence and assurance while I also believe it has given Jordan the opportunity to demonstrate a key leadership characteristic—influencing and inspiring others. He is also the president in Delta Sigma Pi, so seeing him there and how he is consistent in his attitudes in all other organizations is reassuring. Some leaders are very situational and their personality changes from situation to situation, however Jordan and I disagree with the character in leading in a way where your principles are variable depending on the situation.
