Course Prerequisite

Computer Concepts and Applications CSCI 1203 is a prerequisite for this class

and it is assumed that you have the knowledge of the MS Office applications from that course.

Keyboarding skills are valuable in this class; those skills are assumed. If you do not keyboard, by touch, it will take you longer to complete assignments; just keep that in mind as you plan your time for working in this course. There are keyboarding tutorials on the Internet. Also commercial typing tutor programs are available.

Office 2013 must be installed on your home computer and it is available free of charge.

The version of MS Office for a Mac does not have the same options as a Windows based machine. You must have access to a PC based machine. Even though you can complete some work in an on-line environment for reading the e-book and completed the Simulations, Projects completed in MS Office must be completed on a

Windows Based machine. The grading engine does not grade properly for MAC

Updated: 4/11/2020

CSYS 2073 on-line Taff 2/12 options. I have no way of know if an assignment is completed correctly if it marks you off because you have used a MAC-based computer.

Catalog Description

This course is an in-depth treatment of the Microsoft Office product. Access, Excel,

Word, and PowerPoint will be used separately and as an integrated part of Office.

Emphasis will be placed on hands-on training.

Prerequisite: CSCI 1203 Computer Concepts or instructor approval. Lecture 2 hours, lab

2 hours.

Textbooks and other Materials

Image of Code package from TCC Bookstore

1259233480: SIMnet for Office 2013, Nordell SIMbook, Word/Excel/

Access/PPT.

This is a complete Registration Code granting access to the e-books you will be using for this class.

You can also purchase this code when you set up to work in SIMnet.

There is a link to purchase a code—it should cost less at the site but you still need to use the ISBN code listed above

The e-books do not have to be used separately in the learning module. o In other words you don’t have to have a separate reading device. o You read material that is being introduced and then complete a small exercise within that book. These exercises and practice are not required. Just reading the material works for most people.

When you are finished with your reading, you will then take a pre-test on the objectives covered; if you do not have a task mastered in the pretest a practice session is developed where practice exercises can be taken. The pretest can only be taken one time. o You can go straight to the post test if you wish, but it is recommended that you do the practice before you move on to the posttest. Practice is unlimited.

Once finished with the posttest for the chapter you move on to move on to the projects that are completed in MS Word or the other applications as you cover those chapters.

When you set up your SimNet account, please choose the following class.

MOS Certification Exam

.In the course of this class, you have the opportunity to take Microsoft Word MOS certification exam.

You will have to come to the West Campus Academic and Campus Services to take the certification exam. West is the only certified testing sight—no other campuses can administer the test. You can take the requested exam at any time during the term after you have finished Module 1.

The exam must be scheduled so that it is available for you. o You can stop by the West campus (or call) any time to schedule a time.

CSCI 1463, Operating Systems for Microcomputers; CSCI 2013, Word; CSCI 2033, Excel; CSCI

2043, Access; or CSCI 2483, PowerPoint/Multimedia.

Transferability

Students who are interested in transferring TCC credits to a four-year institution should consult the West Campus Counseling office, I-104, Ext. 8176 to determine transferability.

Attendance

In an on-line class, attendance is determined by login and submission of assignments

Daily to Bi-weekly login and completion of assignments is highly recommended so that you don’t get behind

Failure to contact instructor plus not submitting assignments at some point during the first week in class may result in Withdrawal from the course so that you are not charged o There is no reason to not complete work during week one because you will have access to the class in SimNet until your can obtain the code for the course through financial aid.

Students missing two module deadlines in a row may be withdrawn from the course administratively; if not withdrawn personally o At the end of term, if you have not submitted 30.4% of the assigned points, you will receive an administrative withdrawal from the course.

Go to a TCC Business computer lab to complete your work if you can’t use you own machine because it is broken.

Please check the campus closest to you for lab hours.

NOTE: If you fail to complete 30% of the work in this class (300 points) you will receive an administrative withdrawal (AW), not an “F.” The last day of participation will be reported when submitting the withdrawal. Both Administrative Withdrawals and “Fs” will affect financial aid.

1.

There are 1,000 points possible for this class

2.

If you complete enough work to earn 301-594 points, you will receive an F.

3.

Administrative Withdrawals and F’s have the same effect on financial aid .

4.

W’s and AW’s will show up on your transcript, but do not affect your GPA, but an

“F” does.

5.

It is your responsibility to withdraw by the withdrawal date if you do not intend to finish the class.

6.

To receive an incomplete (I) at the end of term to make up work, you must have a passing grade . You must have been completing work and submitting assignments regularly to be considered for an incomplete.

7. You should withdraw or ask for administrative withdrawal if an emergency occurs.

Class Withdrawal

The following statement is provided by TCC for all students attending and directly can affect future funding if you are attending on financial aid of any kind. If you are not attending on financial aid you will not be affected. However, if you are not using financial aid to attend, you may want to read it for future reference.

TCC Financial Aid Policy Statement effective fall 2011 classes

 “We (TCC) wanted to let you know that the

Federal Financial Rules and

Regulations have changed . Beginning now, if you receive any type of federal financial aid (Title IV aid) such as student loans, veterans benefits, grants, scholarships or any other type of federal financial aid, you could be affected.

For the fall 2011 semester and beyond, if you receive any type of Federal Financial

Aid (grant or loan) and you withdraw from or fail a class, you may lose your funding.

TCC is required to run a calculation and determine if we must return some or all of your financial aid funds to the Department of Education. This often leaves a student with a balance owed to TCC that must be repaid.

For this reason, it is crucial that all students who receive any type of financial aid visit with both an academic advisor (Your teacher) and a financial aid advisor before withdrawing from a class or if they feel they are not doing well in a class.

We have provided more details on our website www.tulsacc.edu/finaid . Remember to also check MYTCC email frequently for updates and check your financial aid status on TED.

If you have any questions that are not clearly answered here, visit with your local financial aid office for clarification.

Best wishes for a successful semester,

Class Information

You will be completing the majority of your work through SimNet this semester. .

You will have some assignments and discussions completed or submitted through

Blackboard. Discussion Boards will be completed directly in Blackboard

This is an on-line class, if you have not taken an on-line class before; you need to prepare yourself for the work involved by allotting enough time. o Put aside a minimum of about 3-6 hours each week for a 16-week course and

6-8 if it is an 8-week class. Some people don’t need this much time. As the class proceeds and you become accustomed to the learning environment you will need less time.

Please don’t try to do all of the assignments in a module on the day it is due. You will be frustrated o Also, this is an on-line class in which you are learning new skills and you must work on assignments regularly. o You need to be a self-starter and disciplined in your learning approach.

Please remember , you have a teacher even if you are working in an on-line class.

This class involves learning new material (SIMNet) and then completion of

Homework assignments (completed in the live application from a downloaded file; it does require a time commitment.

In all classes you should plan for twice the number of hours of the class for work; even in an on line class. o Set aside approximately 2-3 hours to complete the chapter’s learning exercises o Set aside another 3-4 hours to complete the Homework Assignments o Stay with due dates; it is very easy to get behind; you may submit an assignment up to one week after the due date for reduced points. o Just a pointer here: E-mail your instructor with questions when you don’t understand a concept.

 You do have an instructor even if you are working on-line

Communications:

 e-mail

: All TCC students receive a designated “

MyTCC

” email address (ex: jane.doe@tulsacc.edu) All communications to you about TCC and course assignments will be sent to your MyTCC e-mail address; and you must use MyTCC email to receive email from the instructor regarding this course.

 Instructor’s E-mail accounts

: if you forward your mails from your school account, be sure you can receive mail from the following addresses. o Millie Taff:

 millie.taff@tulsacc.edu

Please note that when you are typing my e-mail address there is no “t” at the end; it is Taff; not Taft.

Updated: 4/11/2020

CSYS 2073 on-line Taff 6/12 o The mail will be returned if you put a “t” at the end. If it doesn’t, I don’t know where it goes because it doesn’t come to me

Phone: Send an e-mail and I will return call

I do not respond to an e-mail without TCC identification of some sort. o Putting your class name in the subject line will get your e-mail to me. o Use your MyTCC account. o Once you have had an e-mail from me, it will automatically come up when you begin to type millie.

Software

This class requires that you use a full install of Office 2013

.

It is available for free download and is available through Blackboard Organizations tab; SimPaths, projects and exams for office applications will be using SimNet and the majority of your work is graded in that program.

We have discovered students who still use an XP Operating system are unable to download and install 2013.

Be sure you are downloading the version for your computer. Most new computers come with a 64bit into a 32 bit processor. o Check system information for your machine if you are not sure.

8-Week Course Outline

This is the course outline for your course includes due date s for modules. Because of the many formats that are used for MS Office, Due dates are not listed in SIMnet or in Blackboard individually. Most of your work this semester is completed in Myitlab with the exception of the

Updated: 4/11/2020

CSYS 2073 on-line Taff 8/12

Discussion board and Integrated project. This is not a course in which you can finish all the work in just a few hours for an application. Stick to this schedule and you won’t miss due dates.

During Week One there must be some contact for attendance and continued enrollment in the course-- This is what constitutes Contact:

1.

Log into Blackboard and complete the Introduction Discussion Board

2.

Set up SimNet even if you haven’t purchased a code. You can use a temporary code for the first 2-3 weeks of the course, after that you will not have access. This is the name of your course in SimNet

3.

Download MS Office to your PC if you do not have a full 2013 version. Check to see if you have Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. (Access is not normally included in a trial version that comes installed on most machines)

4.

Your first Module of assignments includes both Windows and Word and all of those assignments are due on June 14.

5.

An exception is if you enroll late in the first week of the course, make contact and complete introduction discussion, then catch up as soon as you can

Try not to be late for Module deadlines—they are designed to keep you on track so you can complete the course without stress. I have had students who complete all of the assignments except the integrated project within two weeks. If work is completed within one week of due date, there is no penalty.

Your course consists of five modules. The application modules cover Windows/Word, Excel,

PowerPoint and Access. The Integrated Project module is completed after the PowerPoint module and before the Access Module. There is no access on the Integrated Project.

On the next page you will see an example of the screen you will see when you set up your account with SimNet. Please let me know if you have any questions. Here are the most asked questions:

1.

When are assignments due (see this Outline)

2.

How do I know what my grade is for a module (The grade is averaged for the chapter

Posttests and Projects—3 chapter post tests and six projects [two for each chapter])

3.

How many times can I do assignments ? (E-book as needed; Pretest once; practice as many times as needed; projects up to three times]

4.

When are grades posted to Blackboard? (Windows and Word Posted by Mid-term, remaining modules toward end of term.)

This is an example of the view you will see when you log into SimNet for your course:

Updated: 4/11/2020

CSYS 2073 on-line Taff 9/12

The red book is your textbook and it is interactive. You open it and read the material and practice some if you wish, or you can go straight to the SimPath after reading.

The SimPath consists of a Pretes t over the reading, then Practice only on the tasks you could not complete correctly, and then a Posttest.

You must complete the Pretest to be able to take the

Posttest. The Posttest is the only part of the Book or SimPath that is included in your chapter grades for the module.

The Blue Lightning Bolt assignments are projects that are completed within the Application being covered. There are typically two of these assignments for each chapter covered in an application.

Please Note that in SimNet Windows Review does not have a project to complete a project in

SimNet. The Project assignment consists of two parts to be completed and then submitted through Blackboard. Directions are included in the Module One instructions in Blackboard
