The Passive • When do we use the passive voice and why? • We use it when we don’t know who performed an action or when it’s not important to mention the performer. • We also use the passive voice when we want to avoid mentioning the agent (the subject of the active sentence). • Someone called the cops. ------ Active agent subject The Passive • To change it to the passive voice, the object of the sentence becomes the agent. The passive sentences are formed with be + past participle. • Someone called the cops. ------ Active • Cops (object) becomes the subject. • The cops were called.---- Passive be past participle Notice something about the verbs… • Someone called the cops. • S V O • The cops were called. S V • Everybody enjoyed the movie. S V O • The movie was enjoyed. S V These are transitive verbs- they are followed by a direct object. Only transitive verbs can be made passive. Be careful! • A passive voice sentence must have an object. Here is an active sentence with no object. • We ran. • This cannot be made into an passive sentence. The passive causative • The passive causative is used to talk about something being done by another person or thing, especially a service. • Causative passive uses have and get +object + past participle. • Ex. I get my car checked every three months. • Ex. Peter had his house repaired. • Ex. I got my teeth cleaned last week. • The passive causative is used in the past, present, future and with modals. • I might get my hair cut next week. Simple past causative vs. past perfect • I had my teeth cleaned. (simple past causative. Someone else cleaned my teeth). • I had my make-up done by a professional make-up artist. (someone else did my make-up for me). • I had cleaned my car (past perfect. I had done this before a specific time in the past). • I had ripped my dress before the wedding. You will then write a 5 paragraph summary (essay) based on your interview. Your homework is to do two things: 1) Think of at least ten questions you would ask a partner. Write them down! They must NOT be yes or no questions. Try to think of questions that will force your partner to talk a lot. You will interview a partner today. 2) Download the essay outline (below) and print it out for Friday's class. Writing • Hook- The hook is used to grab the reader’s attention. • Ways to hook a reader: • 1. Ask a question • 2. Use an interesting observation • 3. Use a unique scenario to catch the reader’s attention. • 4. Begin with a famous quote. • 5. Use a surprising or shocking statistic. Topic sentence • Main idea telling the reader what the essay will be about.
