Course description
This year-long course will introduce to the real world experience of running a for-profit store. Students will learn to apply business
responsibility and ethics, promotion, economic decision making, marketing and business plan development and demographics. This
course is offered through the Business and Marketing Dept. and will help open students’ minds to solving challenging business
problems using skills gained in Math, English and the Social Sciences. The content is based on industry validated standards
addressing current business practices, global economics, needs and trends in our community today.
DECA and the Class Fee
We participate in DECA which is a CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) that serves to give our business students as
close to a real-world business experience that can be replicated in the classroom. DECA’s mission is ‘to prepare emerging leaders
and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe’. We compete
as an entire class at our Area 3 competition in January. After taking a DECA test in their chosen field of competition, students will
role play in a business/marketing situation in front of DECA judges where they will need to explain and demonstrate basic business
principles in that scenario. This class fee of $50 covers the DECA membership, the entrance fee, and transportation to Area at the
Meydenbauer Center.
Those students advancing to State DECA and National DECA will be asked to pay for those costs (entrance fees, transportation,
housing) when they qualify. Scholarship support is available. State and National completion is not a mandatory class expectation
but is highly encouraged for those students who qualify.
Food Handlers Permit
Since we are a for-profit store under inspection of the King County Health Department, students must have a valid Food Handlers
permit. Use this link to take the Food Worker course in order to get your food handlers card. Once you are finished with the course
you will be prompted to take a brief test, once you have tested and passed you will need to pay $10.00 for your card, print and sign
food card.
