Put together, they make something new. prefix root suffix Root Words All words start out with a root word. This is the basic part of the word. Root words are helpful for learning both the meaning and the spelling of a word. Suffixes and prefixes can be joined to root words in order to make new words. Examples of Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes Root Words with both Prefixes and Suffixes If we can identify the main part of a word, we can then usually identify both the prefix and the suffix if they are there. This is a word This is the root This is the prefix This is the suffix - unemployment unemployment unemployment unemployment Root and Prefix wash – prewash move – remove clean - unclean Each prefix has a meaning. Root and Suffix wash – washed move – moving clean - cleaner Each suffix has a meaning. Activity 1 Look at the cards on the pin board and complete the table that you have been given. Extra activity available Activity 2 – In Pairs Look at the flash cards. Split the individual words into root and suffix. What additional meaning has the suffix given? Group Activity Share out the laminated cards. As a group, make as many words as you can that have a prefix, a root word, and a suffix. Identify words that contain prefixes. Write the word in a list, and use a dictionary to find the meaning of the word.
