To identify how words can be broken down into individual
parts, and to understand that each part has its own meaning.

• To break down words into their component parts
• To state the meaning of some prefixes and suffixes

Root Words
All words start out with a root word.
This is the basic part of the word.
Root words are helpful for learning both the meaning
and the spelling of a word.
Suffixes and prefixes can be joined to root words in
order to make new words.

If we can identify the main part of a word, we can
then usually identify both the prefix and the suffix if
they are there.

Look at the cards on the pin board and complete the table that you
have been given.

Look at the flash cards.
Split the individual words into root and suffix.
What additional meaning has the suffix given?
Group Activity
Share out the laminated cards.
As a group, make as many words as you can that have a prefix, a root
word, and a suffix.
