Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words




 Create a set of prefix, suffix, and root word cards.
Create a game where the students make words using the root
and a prefix and/or suffix.
For a list of prefixes and suffixes, see “Writer’s Express –
Building Vocabulary Skills page 260 – 269.”
After the students create their word, have them define the
word.
During the reading of the text, have students look for words
with prefixes and suffixes
Examples of words from “Family Tree”
Conductive – with or together
No- nonsense – not
Unlined – not
Prepare – before
Underneath – before
Toughest – most
Telephone – far
Instead – not
Basketful – full of
Different – one who
Untrue – not
Outsider – one who is
Beautiful – full of
Remember - again / one who
