Lamb School I drew an ox because the ox is the animal for the year. I drew fireworks because I saw fireworks in every Chinese Lunar New year. I drew red envelopes because I always got the lucky money in a red envelope for the Chinese New Year. I also drew a lantern because I like lanterns and I like to play with lanterns. I thought about the picture in my head, and then I decided to draw it. There were lots of mountains in my mind. In China, a mountain means long life. Water means happiness. I like drawing mountains and water. Honorable Mention – Katelyn Bassano The Margaret Gioiosa School 2nd Place – Jenny Chin – 2nd Grade Seaford Harbor School I visited China two years ago, there were beautiful houses and temples that I had never seen before. We also saw a show with a fiery dragon holding a red envelope and the dancers were dancing the dragon dance. 3rd Place Angela Chen 2nd Grade P.S. 204 The Vince Lombardi School At the Chinese New Year night, we found a little spot at the edge to watch the dragon parade, my father took the pictures of the dragon balloon show. Everyone was happy and excited; we celebrated the Chinese New Year together. 1st Place – Elizabeth Browning P.S. 50 Frank Hankinson School I drew a giant dragon so it would scare away all the bad spirits for the Chinese New Year. I painted a sunset with me in front of it. Behind the dragon, I painted the city and stars in the sky. Honorable Mention – Wendy Zou, 5th Grade, P.S. 124 Yung Wing School This year is the year of the Ox. I drew an Ox in my picture to tell people that this picture is in the year of Ox. I drew 3 people doing the lion dance and 2 cows are holding gold in their hands. There are lion dances and also people dressed up in dog costumes matching down the street at Chinese New Year. In my drawing is the Great Wall of China, which is a very fantastic structure of China. It is also the only manmade structure that can be seen from the moon. This structure kept invaders from the north. What is really amazing is that the Great Wall is still standing after invaders attacked. Honorable Mention–Kaiyuan Mao, Grade 5 P.S. 173 The Fresh Meadows School 3rd Place - Christina Skrastins Grade 5 P.S. 207 Elizabeth G. Leary School The painting I made reflects towards Chinese culture. It does because of the red color, Ying & Yang, and the Chinese dragons. The red background shows the beliefs of Chinese people that red is a lucky color. The symbol of Ying & Yang is in the middle. The dragons symbolize as Ying and Yang. This all tells you about the culture of China. 2nd Place - Selena Perez Grade 5 P.S. 96 Richard Rodgers School In my painting I drew two people. They seem to be looking at flowers and relaxing. They are sitting on a porch. The porch has bunches of flowers that surround them. They are dressed in beautiful clothing. 1st Place - Elaine Lee Grade 4 P.S. 205 Alexander Graham Bell School The picture I drew is a tree with golden kumquats. The golden kumquats are fruits that will give you health, wealth, good fortune, and a long happy life for many years ahead. The man is the spirit of good fortune and wealth. Those are some of the common symbols that we use in celebrating Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the Ox. The importance of dragons in the Chinese culture, Chinese emperors feel that they are dragons and are sons of Heaven, and the dragon is also seen as a symbol of imperial power. Chinese hold the cherry blossom trees in high regard for over a thousand years. They feel that the cherry blossom is a symbol of beauty and is also linked to samurai, where the falling petals represent fallen warriors. Honorable Mention Christopher Spinelli Grade 8, P.S. 207 Fillmore Academy Honorable Mention – Caroline Juang 8th Grade, Manhasset Middle School A cluster of stories passed down in Chinese tradition has molded the Chinese culture to what it is today. The painting I created for the contest displays my interest in the stories of Chinese culture. The images shown in my painting include some of the many interesting tales in Chinese tradition, including the Chinese Zodiac, a warrior god, Hou Yi is shooting down nine of the ten suns in the sky. Our class took a trip to Chinatown. I found out that fishing was one of the four basic occupations popular with Chinese people so I created the large fish in the center of my art. I used the color red to symbolize wealth And prosperity while the yellow is symbolic of the earth. 3rd Place - Lauren Lynch, 6th Grade PS/IS 87Q Chinese culture can be about many things, dance, clothing, food, temples, etc. Dragon Boat Festivals are very important in Chinese culture because of the legend that it protects the body of Qu Yuan’s. Qu Yuan killed himself to be with his fallen dynasty. This shows loyalty to our culture and heritage. 1st Place - Lucy Ye, 7th Grade J.H.S. 189Q Since I am so attracted to nature it is only natural that I should relate to the subject matters presented in many Chinese’s artwork. This is why I decided to choose a flower as my subject because it is what most fascinates me in nature. Honorable Mention – Anum Khali 11th Grade, Abraham Lincoln HS The truth and beauty of nature lies within a flower. “莫道不消魂,帘卷 西凤,人比黄花瘦。” 这是我此次创作源泉。 一个古代女子手握黄 花独坐在石头上,脸 上浮现的是忧郁的神 情。而此时,她的思 绪已经脱离了实在的 肉体,飞翔到九霄云 外去了。这个画面我 现在已用淡墨描涂在 纸上。黄昏时节,独 自把盏赏菊,己自神 伤,而此时的菊花开 得极盛极美。 Honorable Mention- Shu Jun Li 12th Grade Abraham Lincoln High School In this picture I tried to illustrate dragon which would reflect Chinese culture. And the ball is to represent Yin and Yang. Also I tried to use bright colors to make this picture more Chinese because China is a very bright country. Honorable Mention - Elena Vlasiuc 12th Grade, Tottenville High School 3rd Place - Hei Man Mok, 10th Grade Commack High School It was told that watching these “Chinese lions” dance would receive luck the rest of the year. People circled around the “Chinese lions” and give red packets to the drum crews who made the music while the lions were dancing. My painting displays a Chinese woman taking a moment out of her busy live to mediate and become one with nature. She sits alone with her writing table and a scroll. She is listening to the voice of nature as she reflects her life. The surroundings and the birth of nature, and how the clouds open up to bring in a new world for this woman. 2nd Place – Liseth Flores, 12th Grade Richmond Hill High School Inspired by the Chinese culture, I have realized that Korean culture was not much different than it has been long ago. My interest in jewelry has inspired me to come to my project's achievement. Asian queens and princesses had an attraction for exotic jewelry's and expensive pins. They also kept a traditional routine of the prohibition of cutting their hairs. My project emphasizes Chinese culture in an exotic tradition. 1st Place - Christina Shin, 11th Grade Bayside High School Our special thanks to: NYCDOE Office of English Language Learners New York University Metro Center
