SHAC Meeting Minutes 8/30/10
In Attendance: Kim Kimball (Chair), Denise Kablaitis, Sabrina Blok (Vice Chair), Ray Gavit, Rickay Glover, Michele
Simcik, Joy Busby, Andrea Mulvogue, Angela Kleppe, Rachel Perez, Patrice Clark, Shelli Aday, Nicole Love, Jackie
McGary
Introductions were made of all members.
Health Awareness: Nicole, at Redi Clinic, will offer their organization to conduct their program “Germ Busters” at
the elementary school. It is geared toward PK-2nd grade and last 30-45 minutes. Angela has noticed that many
Middle School students have poor hygiene and it wouldn’t hurt to have some kind of reminder that is age
appropriate for them. Denise suggested high school students from HST (Health Science Technology) visit the
elementary schools and teach (topics TBD).
G.A.S.P. (Game Adolescents Shouldn’t Play): It was agreed that it was an important program that should be
presented to grades 5-12. SHAC will present the program and plan to the school board. SHAC members will meet
with principals to get their opinion on the program and how it should be implemented and email all board members
on the feedback from the meetings. Target month for the presentations is December.
Sabrina – HES
Shelli – Ray & Farley
Angela – Hutto MS
Rachel – VHE
Patrice – NJES
Denise – HHS
It was suggested that we have 2 evening programs at the PAC; one for 5 th graders and their parents and one for
everyone. Programs during school on campus would be 9-10 grade, 11-12 grade, FMS (possibly 2 assemblies TBD by
principal), HMS (possibly 2 assemblies TBD by principal), and possibly all elementary school 5 th grades (TBD after
meeting with principals) with the option for parents to “opt out”.
Rickay will be contacting both presenters to find out if December works for their schedule and the logistics of
meeting with all groups of students.
Texting While Driving – B.U.S.T. (Buckle Up and Stop Texting): Program will be presented to 11-12 grade and
possibly 10th grade. Presenter is driving from West Texas and does not charge, but takes donations. Angela made
a motion to cap donation at $1,000 for the rep. to present at the HS. Sabrina seconded the motion. The motion
was approved. There is a possibility that other districts may share the cost (Bastrop and Brenham are currently
interested). Shelli suggested we should make sure we get as much media coverage as possible for her efforts and
to help communicate the message.
Bullying: During our meetings with the principals we need to ask them what their campus is doing to address
bullying at their school. Ray will check on the cost of the “Morris Brothers” bullying program. HMS also has a
program in place with pink shirts.
Seeking Additional Parent and Student SHAC Members: Shelli suggested that each current member make it their
goal to initiate a parent or student to join SHAC and bring them to the next meeting. Pink “SHAC Seeking New
Members” flyers will be placed in all the campus front offices.
SHAC Conference: Will be held Jan. 28-29 (Expenses are paid for exec. board members)
Nutrition – Update on campus cafeterias: Jackie updated SHAC with many new improvements and much news on
what is happening in our cafeterias. She also brought the menus for all schools to view.
-
Elementary and Middle Schools have switched from plastic sporks to plastic forks and knives.
-
High school is using utensil dispensers.
-
Cafeteria staff was reminded to wash serving utensils between lunches.
-
Cafeterias are using whole wheat when possible (hamburger bun, hotdog buns, pizza dough).
-
They are striving to offer the same choices to all grade levels because there have been complaints of
particularly later lunches not receiving the same choices because the cafeteria has run out of that choice.
SHAC requested that they keep track of the frequency this is occurring.
-
At least 1 cafeteria employee from each campus will become CPR Certified.
-
Adults may receive extra condiments not offered to the students (ie. sour cream)
-
Working on a possible option of offering an extended menu to teachers on certain days.
-
One cafeteria employee from each campus will attend the next C.A.T.C.H. training.
-
Teacher portions will be the same as what is offered at the high school.
-
Jackie pointed out that the elementary campuses are offering special days on the menu (ie. Grandparents
Day Celebration/Biscuits and Gravy with Grandparents for Breakfast).
-
As part of their “Going Green” effort, HES is working on installing a dishwasher and HMS is piloting a
washable black tray.
Special thanks to Jackie for keeping us in tune with what’s happening in the kitchens!
Presenting to the School Board: It was decided, by members, that SHAC will present to the school board in
October about G.A.S.P., sharing the feedback from principals about bullying in the schools and the prospect of
having most H.I.S.D. teachers certified in C.P.R. SHAC will also present to the school board in March to recap
what projects we have accomplished for the year and goals for the 2011-12 school year.
C.P.R.: It was suggested that all SHAC members become certified in C.P.R. in order to set a good example to the
school board and school district as a whole. We set the training date for September 20, from 6:00-9:00 pm.
Goals for the 2010-11 school year: It was requested that members bring ideas to the next meeting of projects and
programs to be implemented by SHAC this school year. Nicole will bring ideas from the last TSHAC meeting, held
in January 2010.
Shelli pointed out that there is a P.E. curriculum at Veterans’ Hill, but the state does not provide it. VHE has a
shortage of PE equipment that could be a possible goal for the school year – to discuss at next meeting. Before
our next meeting, P.E. coaches will be asked what equipment they would wish for.
Shelli also thought of offering scholarships.
Additional AEDs are needed.
Health Fair: Tabled until next meeting.
Leftover Funds: Possibly using for P.E. equipment for VHE?
Next SHAC Meeting: Scheduled for September 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the High School
