MINUTES
The meeting started at 11:32am
Darie McCleaves:

Welcomes representatives of the SHAC Committee and asked everyone to introduce themselves.

Minutes from previous meeting were reviewed and approved by the committee.
Steve Murphy:

Initiated the vote for new parent co-chair Darie McCleaves, parent of a student at Shoemaker High School. The committee approved
the recommendation by unanimous vote.

Healthy U.S. School Challenge 2014 applications for: Clifton Park, East Ward, Harker Heights Elementary, Fowler, Meadows,
Bellaire, Cedar Valley, Montague Village, Ira Cross, and Iduma for Bronze; Pershing Park, Clear Creek, and Cavazos for Silver

TPSNP going away as of July 1, 2014. Formation of a review committee needed to update District Wellness Policy: Rodney Smith,
Stacey Williams, Darie McCleaves, Linda McCrane, Steve Murphy, and Trish Brown

SB 460: TEA developing a plan for training teachers by May of 2014

SB 376: Offering universal breakfast program based on high free & reduced meal percentages at the school. The following schools
will be participating during the 2014-2015 school year: Nolan and Gateway Middle, East Ward, Harker Heights, Peebles, Sugar Loaf,
West Ward, Bellaire, Hay Branch, and Clear Creek Elementary.
JJ Johnson:

Relay Recess/Field Day: Elementary/Middle School based programs that teaches or reinforces healthy habits and physical activity.
Provides a liaison to provide materials or online based support for campuses who participate. The program also provides some
fundraising for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

The committee voted and approved making Relay Recess/Field Day an option for campuses to choice to participate in
Trish Brown:

SPARK: Consulted with all the PE teachers to get equipment orders for schools based on need. Also added special campuses: Bell
County, Metroplex, Gateway, and Pathways providing curriculum and equipment for their programs.

Fitnessgram: Training in process for new web based program for all teachers to input their information.

Worth the Wait: Parent meeting March 24th at Manor Middle School. Program also talking about making good choices such as not
texting and driving.

HB1018: Items discussed at last meeting were the “jamming minute”, currently implemented at elementary campuses, run clubs at
middle schools, as well as more activities available after school
Tom Rogers:

Healthy and Wise Newsletter no longer available, still waiting on recommendations from Region 12 about a replacement. YMCA,
Boys and Girls Club, CYSS, and AYPYN are the only programs that offer a snack after school for its members. The recommendation
was made for parents to contact the student activities director at their campus for more information about their schools programs.
Brenda Smith:

FFWF: First planning meeting is February 20, 2014 at 1130am at JPLC. The fitness fair promotes healthy eating and physical activity
for the whole family.

Yira Barron presented a donation check to the committee for $100 to go toward the FFWF
Other Business/Discussion:

School Based Health Clinic: Still meeting to discuss pilot school to offer services to include off post campuses. Megan and Dr. Craft
visited a school in San Antonio that uses the program and are excited about the opportunities for our district.

Dr Craft advised the committee about an anti-bullying online reporting program soon to be available to the community similar to what
is being used at the campuses in an effort to prevent and address bullying in our schools.

Parent asked why meals are being thrown away when students do not have money. Steve explained the charge policy that allows
students to charge one lunch meal as well as the option for campuses to offer other alternatives such as peanut butter and jelly or
cheese sandwiches or special accts with funds for these students. A representative from Cavazos PTA commented on how they
provided $1000 for their school’s account in an effort to prevent students’ trays from being pulled that resulted in those funds being
exhausted in only two months.

