COURSE INFORMATION
INDIVIDUAL IN SOCIETY
Syllabus
This course provides an introduction to the study of the individual as a social being, with
emphasis on theoretical conceptions of the relationship between the individual and society,
and structural and cultural constraints versus individual agency.

once daily on weekdays throughout the semester and usually reply within 48 hours to
email.

and some good times to call you and I will do so as soon as possible (usually within 48
hours).
Office Hours: I hold office hours by appointment only. Should you need to meet with me,
please send an email and we will work out a time that is good for the both of us. In addition,
most times, I will be available after class for questions.
NOTE: This course is web-assisted through Blackboard. I highly recommended that you
familiarize yourself with the Blackboard program, especially the exam and messaging/email
features.

Course Requirements
1. Exams:
You are required to complete three (3) exams for the course. Exams are
structured within the following parameters:
 Exams can be found under “Assessments” on the course website
(Blackboard).
 Each exam is comprised of 50 multiple choice and true/false
questions. All exam questions relate to the readings and lectures
reviewed for that section of the course (exams are not cumulative).
 Exams will be made available from Friday at 1 AM through Saturday
at 11:30 PM of the weeks that they are scheduled.
 One hour and fifteen minutes is allotted for each exam. Exams
exceeding the one hour and fifteen minute deadline will be considered
late and not accepted.
 You are encouraged to take your exams on a reliable computer and
internet connection, to avoid crashes. If you question your

computer/internet reliability please take the exams on one of the
computers in a campus computer lab.
 If you encounter a technical problem with an exam, you must contact
FIU ecampus support (available by phone, email, and online chat
Mon.-Fri. and by email and chat on Sat-Sun.) to seek technical
assistance immediately and work with them to resolve the problem.
Please also send me a short email summarizing the problem. I will
work with them to resolve the problem.
o As a general rule, if problems are found to be systemic in
nature (e.g. Blackboard is down or the FIU Online network is
down, etc.), exams will be reset for students. If problems are
found to be due to operator error, exams will not be reset.
 There are no makeup exams.
 Each exam is worth 100 points. Total possible points for this
assignment = 300
This assignment provides an opportunity for you to build confidence, skills,
and strategies in applying the course concepts and theories while connecting
them to your real world experience. The assignment will be completed and
submitted on Blackboard using the Discussions tool.
 Each week, you may choose from a variety of topics/questions
related to the readings for that week and write about the ways in
which the material is relevant to your own life.
 You are required to write a minimum of 500 words for each posting.
 A grading rubric is provided on the discussion board.
 Each posting is worth 16 points, for a total of 224 points toward your
final grade.
You can earn 1 point each class for attending/participating from start to
finish.

ADDITIONAL ISSUES
1. Extra Credit: Extra credit assignments are not offered in this course.
2. Study Groups:
a. I will create 5 study groups, into which students can self-enroll. The study
groups provide members with a chat room, file exchange, discussion forums, and
email so that students can collaborate to study for exams throughout the
semester.
3. Chat Room: A chat room is available on the course website for students to use at
anytime. Simply click on the “Chat” button in the left menu to enter the chat.
4. Missed or Late Assignments: Under no circumstances will missed or late assignments
(including exams) be accepted.
5. Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities should contact me in the first
two weeks of class to make arrangements for any accommodations they may need.
