Humans have lived in Southeast Asia for tens of
thousands of years.
Some Malaya groups also undertook sea voyages
settling the many islands that today form
Indonesia
These indigenous people developed agricultural
civilizations
On the Southeast Asian Mainland the Khmers
settled on Cambodia and Vietnam, the Mons
moved into Myanmar and the Malays settled on
the Malay Peninsula

Valuable spices grown in Southeast Asia drew outside
traders to the region.
While exchanging goods with Southeast Asians these
foreigners passed on new ideas and practices that
blended with Southeast Asia traditions.
Art forms by Hindu and Buddhist inspired the religion of

During a thousand years of Chinese rule, the Vietnamese
adopted China’s writing system
Today Indian and Chinese ethnic communities are
scattered throughout Southeast Asia particularly in Brunei,
Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam
In Singapore today, people of ethnic Chinese ancestry
make up 76 percent of the Country’s total population
Arabs and Indian traders brought cotton and silk
to Southeast Asia around the A.D. 800’s
 Islamic spread from east costal areas to interior
areas of the Indonesian islands and the Malay
peninsula.
 During the 1200’s Southeast Asians-especially
those in port towns –began to convert into Islam
 Islam spread from coastal areas to interior areas
of the Indonesian Island and Malay Peninsula
 Today Muslims form the majority of the
population in Brunel, Malaysia, and Indonesia.






During the 1400’s and 1500’s European explorers
searched for Southeast Asia’s spices.
For example, from the Latin America the
Spaniards introduced various chili pepper that
added new flavor in the cooking of Southeast
Asian cooking
The European voyagers took control of Thailand
during the voyage.
Drinking coffee became popular in Europe in the
1600’s.
Coffee came from the Arabia Peninsula, and on
various Southeast Asia islands.

 Indonesia the world’s fourth most populous
country has more than 206 million people
living on 13,600 scattered Islands
 The overall population density of Indonesia is
280 people per square mile :o

Population growth rates
The population of Southeast Asia is
growing at rate of 1.6% per year
compared with the 1.3% average growth
rate for the world.
 Some countries, such as Thailand,
Indonesia, and Singapore, are working to
slow their population growth rate.

Cambodia population decline
• Science the 1970’s Cambodia's population
growth rate has been below the region’s average.
• Many people died as a result of starvation,
torture, and executions.
• Cambodia lost 28% of its population as a result
of hash rule by the Khmer Rouge communist
government.





Increasing numbers of the regions people are
moving from rural to urban centers.
Population shifts has been a result of greater
economic and educational opportunities.
Urbanization is the shift from rural to urban
lifestyles.
In some regions, a single major city leads all
other cities in attracting people, resources,
and commerce.
Primate cities are an urban area that serves
as a country’s major port, economic center,
and often its capital.
