Texas School for the Deaf High School Chemistry Syllabus School Year: 2015-2016 Grade Placement: 10 Credit: 1.0 Instructor: Mrs. Suzanne Milford, M.S, B.A V. Phone: 512 410 6258 E-mail: Suzanne.Milford@tsd.state.tx.us High School Room #308 Course Description This course includes a study of measurements skills, atomic structure, and the periodic table, bonding stoichiometry, states of matter and kinetic theory, solutions, acids, bases, and equilibrium, and simple chemical and nuclear reactions. Mathematical relationships of chemical reactions and mathematical descriptions of gas behavior are studied under experimental conditions and in problem-solving situations. The course includes laboratory experiments designed to reinforce course content. It aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Science (TEKS). Textbook and other resources required 1. 2. 3. 4. Modern Chemistry e- textbook, username and passwords will be assigned Modern Chemistry Interactive Reader consumable booklet iPad Scientific calculator (TI-30X, TI-34, TI-36) or Graphic Calculator (TI-83) Supplies Materials necessary for you to be successful in this class: 1. 4- colored folders with pockets. 2. Composition book or subject notebook 3. Pen/pencil/Eraser 4. Closed-toe shoes 6 Class Rules Be on Time. Be Prepared to begin daily activities such as soon as you enter the classroom and use classroom time productively. Bring all needed materials and homework to class. (Pencils, Paper, Notebook, and iPad) Use respectful language. Always follow teacher’s instructions. Keep your hands and feet to yourself. • Consequences (This will make an impact on the grades under participation category.) Students may immediately issued a detention or suspension depending on the nature of misconduct. (Class C Form) • 1st time: Warning • 2nd time: A meeting with your teacher. • 3rd time: will be issued a detention or suspension (Class C form) Lab Rules Student Safety Contract must be signed before starting any laboratory activities. Always follow the safety procedure and practice. There is no tolerance for ANY type of misconduct. Therefore, there is no warning for the 1st time. Students will be asked to sit at their desk to work on other assignments. They will receive a zero for the laboratory activity. Failure to do so results serious consequences. Students may be issued a detention or suspension depending on the nature of misconduct. Expectations All work must be completed to receive full credit. Late homework due to an excused absence will receive full credit. All homework must be completed before known absence due to sports/academic trips. You will be responsible to make up work following excused absences. We will agree on the due date of the assignments. School Policy Tardies and Absences: The tardy and absence policy in this class follows that of the school. Tests, quizzes, bellwork, or assignments cannot to be made up unless the student has an excused absence(s). Any absences and tardies will have an impact on the participation grade. Bathroom/ office/hallway passes: To minimize distractions and interruptions, no passes will be given during the first and last fifteen minutes of class. Food and Drinks: Students may eat and drink during class IF they agree to keep their areas clean and dispose trash appropriately. This is a privilege and may be revoked at any time by the teacher. You may NOT share their food/drink with anyone in class. You may NOT eat and drink in the Lab. Cheating/ Plagiarism consequences: No credit for the assignment or test in which plagiarism or cheating occurred and will lower participation grade. A discipline report will be filled out. There will be no chance for a make up. Copying: If two or more people turn in homework that has been copied from each their grades will be automatically be dropped to a 50% for that assignment. You may work together in a group, but the answers must be in your own words. Electronic Device: Electronic devices such as smartphones, video games, headphones and music player are not allowed in class. iPads and Laptops: Do not start using iPads when not prompted to and stay on task when using laptops/iPads. Consequences will be lowered participation grade and possibly a discipline report. Educational Trips The purpose of educational trips in this course is designed to enhance the hands-on learning experiences and make real-world connections of content-based instruction from the classroom to the world. These educational trips are to be regarded to be the same as a regular class, therefore absence policy & grade policy will apply. Note that the Academic Intervention Program (AIP) has specific rules regarding field trips for students who are placed in the program. Grading System Your quarterly grade will be based on the following grade weight: Participation (class performance, attendance, having materials, etc.)…………… 15% Bellwork ………………………………………………………………………. 5% Homework………………………………………………………………………... 15% Activity Sheets ………………………………………………………………… 10% Lab Reports …………………………………………………………………… 15% Quizzes/Test……………………………………………………………………… 35% Folders (organized and utilized)……………………………………………………. 5% Total: 100% Homework is due at the beginning of class. If your homework is late 1 day late: -25% 2 days late: -50% 3 days late: 0 and there will be no make up. Occasionally, I will give you opportunity for extra credits with assignments and tests: 5 points Tutoring Schedule Please let me know the day or two days before if tutoring is needed and I will assign a pass and order lunch.
