Racial Profiling

A quote about the difference between discrimination and racial profiling.
It is a secondary source because it was an opinion article. The article was produced on December 14
2014 by Unknown. The purpose of this source was to show what people thought about racism and
racial profiling. The article was intended for the public and it was written to show what people
thought about the subject and their opinions on it. The value of the quote to the event is that it
sheds light on what people think racial profiling is. People think racial profiling is being picked on, if
you are a colour that is not white. But it isn’t, the quote explains partially what racial profiling
actually is. I chose this quote because it’s straight foreword. It gets to the point of racial profiling.
Plus this quote says a lot. For example, it tells us that places where people “say” there’s a lot of
racial profiling, there isn’t really, it’s just there’s a lot of cops around making sure nothing bad is
going on. But at the same time, there is a lot of racial profiling where there’s crime.
Blacks Refused in Night Club
A group of black men were denied the entrance of night clubs in Calgary.
This is a primary source because it is a video. It was made in 2004 in Calgary, Alberta. It
was broadcasted on Global TV. The audience was the public because the video was to
show the public that racial profiling is still an issue in the modern day. In the video, it
shows that people, get racially profiled for the simplest things, like going to a club. I
chose this video because it has a strong message and it’s easier to understand what racial
profiling is.
Red, White & Blue (A Poem For Trayvon Martin)
Gather 'round as I run it down...
This poem starts where a black teenage boy
Lay face down on the ground...
The last thing he heard is the sound
Of a single gun shot
On the block that was hot
But he wasn't packing the heat...
Wearing jeans and a hoodie
This child was racially profiled
And all he was doing
Was walking down the street...
See, we live in a land
Where EVERY black man looks suspicious...
And we only have the right
To remain violated
And every one of us deemed malicious...
Fictitious lies and false alibis
Is what makes us vicious
And our very presence makes them scared
But even their fears are superstitious...
The writing's on the wall
Even though local law enforcement
Acts like they don't see it...
Be it the injustice of a twisted system
With this wrongful death, I'm left anemic...
At seventeen this young man’s dreams
Of growing up were laid to rest
And as he cried and screamed for help
He took a bullet to the chest…
A poem about the tragic death of Trayvon Martin.
Well, I digress that this
Didn't have to happen
For this world to wake up and see...
That this act in twenty twelve
Took us back to Nineteen Sixty-three...
We live this fallacy because in reality
This land of the free and home of the
brave...
Needs a lesson in racial progression
Instead of sending our children
To an early grave...
And as I sit here with a migraine
Because I can't get it in my head...
That while a killer is running free
Trayvon Martin was left for dead...
The stench behind self defense
Tries to stick but where's the glue?
Left for dead, his blood was red
His killer was white and it left us blue...
This child was racially profiled
And he didn't have a clue...
Left for dead, his blood was red
His killer was white... and it left us blue...
The poem is a primary source. It was made on March 23
2012 by Antwian Marcel Crawford. It was made on
Facebook. This poem talks about the death of Trayvon
Martin, and how racial profiling is a problem. Racial
profiling affects everyone; community and family. I chose
the poem because it gives an emotional side of the topic.
Political Cartoon
The political cartoon represents the death of the truth.
The political cartoon is a primary source. It was made on July 23 2013. The cartoon has a
lot of deep meaning, and that is why I chose it. The cartoon shows a lynching tree (a tree
meant for hanging), hanging the “truth”. This is related to racial profiling because Trayvon
Martin’s case was based on racial profiling. There is size and symbolism shone in the
cartoon.

This video is about the high rate police had in questioning black people.
This video is a primary source. It was produced in Toronto, on February 2010. The video was
produced by Randy Risling and used in an article by the Toronto star. The video is intended to the
public. The purpose was to inform people how racial profiling experienced in Toronto. The video is
also used to convey the opinions of the citizens who were a victim to racial profiling and the
thoughts the police has about their job and what they are doing. The value of this video to
historians is to learn how racial profiling is carried out and how it is expanding throughout the
years is Canada. A limitation of this video is that there is no interview with a white person who
has experienced racial profiling. It may show to historians if the police are actually biased on the
way they treat different racial groups during these situations.
This info graph shows how many racial group are being
racially profiled
This info graph is a secondary
source. It is about the Oakland, USA
region. It was posted on the
website justice4alanblueford.org,
on February 1, 2013 by j4ab. The
audience of the info graph is for the
public. The purpose is to bring light
to Alan Blueford, a black man who
was shot by the police. It also
shows statistics on how the racial
groups of people are experiencing
with racial profiling in the USA. The
value of this info graph shows how
black people are mainly the victims
of this and how this is becoming a
huge problem with racism. A
limitation can be that this info
graph does not include other parts
of the USA. The information is
limited to one part and doesn’t
show the general information of the
whole nation.
This is rally for Sammy Yatim to protest for justice of his death.
This picture is a primary source. The rally was held in Yonge and Dundas in Downtown
Toronto in July 2013. The photographer is unknown but the picture was posted by Rene
Johnson from the Toronto Star. The picture is intended to the public. The purpose of the
picture was to bring light to the Sammy Yatim situation and to show how the police are taking
care of the suspects under a crisis situation. The value of this picture is for historians to learn
about the security in Canada and the ways the police are dealing with these types of
situations. A limitation of this case was that the police/viewers don’t have Sammy Yatim's
words. By knowing what actually happen will be a better way for everyone to know what the
police are actually doing when the situation happened.
This info graph is a secondary
source. It was posted on October 1,
2013 by the Rexdale Community
Legal Clinic. The audience is the
public. The purpose of this info
graph is to show how much people
are being passed around the card;
that they have to fill out when being
documented. Also which group is
mostly targeted and how this
situation is growing. The value is for
historians to study about how police
in Canada are doing their jobs when
stopping people and giving them
the card. In addition this shows how
sexist the police are by mostly
targeted men instead of women.
The limitation is that the info graph
is based on a specific most carded
location in Toronto, so it is missing
the general information that will
show the all the places of Toronto.
Info graph shows the amount of racial group who are being carded in
Rexalle
