Composition of Blood
Blood is made up of:
Plasma:
•Pale yellow fluid
•Composed of mostly water, with small amounts of protein
•Average of 2-3 liters of plasma in the human body
•Carry nutrients and wastes to their respected places
throughout the body
Red Blood Cells:
•250 million RBC in a drop of blood
•Contain a protein named hemoglobin
•RBC carry gasses used in respiration throughout the body

White Blood Cells:
•Colorless cells with an irregular shape, contain a nucleus
•Five different types of WBC
•Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils, Monocytes and
Lymphocytes
•Each WBC plays a different role in the body’s
immune system
WBC in action
Platelets:
•Composed of pieces of cytoplasm, which have no
nucleus
•Secretes serotonin to constrict torn blood vessels
•Gather at the site of a torn blood vessel to clog gaps
in broken vessels, in an effort to stop bleeding
