The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins Would you be willing to compete in a live televised reality show in which the winner is showered with gifts such as… …a new home, money for life, and a career mentoring new opponents each year? But if you LOSE… You pay with your LIFE. Still want to play? What if you didn’t have a choice? Sixteen-year old Katniss Everdeen finds herself in a no-win situation: Save her loved ones and lose her own life… Or save herself, at their expense. Wrtier was inspired to write The Hunger Games after she had been channel surfing between watching live coverage of the Iraq war and a reality TV show . She was also influenced by mythology, especially the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Roman gladiator battles as entertainment for the masses contributed, as well. The Setting The story is set many, many years in the future. The country (in which Katniss lives) is located in the former North America after natural disasters and the oceans “swallowed up” much of the land. This new country is called Panem. The Setting: Panem Panem consists of 12 districts surrounding the Capitol City. Note: The location of each district and outline of Panem is purely speculation. Capitol City The Districts (smaller red dots) The districts are a dystopian society and government. The Capitol is a utopian city. Dystopia is a fictional society characterized by human misery, oppression, disease, and overcrowding. The government is usually totalitarian: one that exercises control over the freedom, will, or thought of others. Utopia is an imaginary place that is ideally perfect: free from poverty and suffering. As punishment for the rebellion against the Capitol, the district citizens are forced into a life of poverty, starvation, and hard labor… To further repress the district citizens, the Capitol required all children aged 12-18 to enter their names into a lottery or reaping to see who will compete in the annual Hunger Games competition. Each year in the Hunger Games, twenty-four district children enter the arena to fight to the death. Only one will survive and be crowned the victor. The Capitol forces all citizens to watch The Hunger Games competition on live TV. It was created by the Capitol to remind the district citizens of their past wrongs. Watching their children die is the district citizens’ repentance for the rebellion. Every district child aged 12 to 18 MUST enter their name into the reaping. If, however, they wanted food for themselves and their families, they could sign up for tesserae (which provided grain and oil for one person for a year). The catch? Their names would be entered into the reaping multiple times for each family member who needs food. District 1 • Its industry is making luxury items for the Capitol. Due to the nature of its industry, it's considered the wealthiest district, the only other wealthier area being the Capitol itself. It is a Career District. District 2 • District 2's seal depicts a block of stone and carving tools. The district's public presentation is that of stone quarries, but it also manufactures weaponry, makes trains, and supplies Peacekeepers. District 3 • District 3's primary industry is general electronics of many types, though it is known for also making various mechanical products such as automobiles and firearms District 4 • District 4's industry is fishing, thus most residents have experience using nets and tridents, making fishhooks from scratch, swimming, and identifying edible sea life. District 5 • This district's industry is power. • Nuclear, electric, and using coal to make energy. District 6 • This district's industry is transportation. District 7 • District 7's industry is lumber and many of its residents have experience with hatchets, axes, saws, and other tree cutting tools. District 8 • District 8's industry is the production of textiles, and they have at least one factory that is primarily used for making Peacekeeper uniforms. District 9 • District 9 is the least heard about District. District 9's industry is grain. Little is known about this district, just that there are lots of farmland for Grain. District 10 • Livestock is District 10's industry. All the meat and cattle is raised in this district. Ranchers and Butchers are the main occupation of this district. District 11 • District 11's industry is agriculture - orchards and fields of grain and cotton surround the district. Almost everything grown is shipped directly to the Capitol. It is one of the poorest districts in Panem, second only to District 12. District 12 • District 12's seal depicts a block of stone and carving tools. The district's public presentation is that of stone quarries, but it also manufactures weaponry, makes trains, and supplies Peacekeepers. Your Speech • You will be given a random district. And a random job in that district. • You will attempt to persuade me that your job in your district is so important that you cannot be sent to the hunger games. Happy Hunger Games May the odds be ever in your favor…
