Mind/Brain Behaviour
• Bombardment with brain based apps. What exactly are they?
• Everything changes our brain. Only until early days of imaging tech. Was this accepted as fact.
◦ The brain is plastic and is formed by everything we do.
• On average the evidence shows that the results of brain based apps are neutral or even
negative when
dealing with core cognitive skills
• By looking at words we are processing it just by looking at it. If you have initial experience with
an activity
more of that skill can be developed by watching others performing that activity or by reading
about that
activity.
• The transferability of skills learned from brain based apps on average is only local, ie, memory
improvement
training improves memory for those brain based apps but nothing else. Can not be transferred
to
different areas.
• Children who are bilingual by the age of five have better cognitive flexibility.
• Attention described in a simple way can be directed outwards and inwards. When attention is
pivoted inward
the brain system that is activated is the same (default mode) as opposed when our attention is
pivoted outward
where the brain system that is activated depends on the task that is being performed.
• Tech is giving us cognitive superpowers: What kind of people do we want to be? What is the
role of the tech
industry?
Skills in a certain area can be improved just by watching someone perform that activity (with an
initial experience in
that activity). These findings can be transferred to digital media when dealing with youth.
